THE TELEGRAPH AND MESSENGER; FRIDAY, MAY 22, 1885.
another terrible explosion.
A Steel Boiler Explodes. Killing One Man
and Wounding Several Others.
Early yesterday morning the city wsj star
tled by the announcement that another terri
ble ex plot ion had take i place, killing several
men and wounding others. The reports were
widely exaggerated, and It was difficult, be
fore visiting the scene, to ascertain anything
definite or reliable. It was soon learned, how
ever, that mill No. 2 of the Bibb Manufactur
ing Company was the scene of the fatal casu
ally, and thitherward the crowd rushed.
Arriving on the scene, it required only a
moment’s inspection to convince the most
floptical that something terrible had hap
pened. The sight that met the eye waa one
seldom witnessed. In the rear of the mill,
which faces Oglethorpe street, waa a pile of
debris which baffled description. Whole sec
tions of brick walls, pieces of Iron, de
tached portions of machinery, splintered
timber and the like were strewn
around in infinite confuson, presenting a
chaotic mtia that could only have been pro
duced by an unusual happening.
In the vicinity had gathered a varied t.yong
that watched the scene with morbid curios
ity. Workmen were busy straightening the
wreck, while others were repairing a shatter
ed walL Others, employes of the mill, stood
inertly by, their hands buried in their pockets,
their faces wearing expressions of silent hor
ror. All these details were taken In at a
glance by the crowd on the outside, not a sin
gle movement waa lost, or a feature omitted.
A more detailed examination brought to
light the particulars of the wrtek, and the ac
cldent It suggested Four rooms visited sep
arately showed a confusion that
could only have revolted from
rifle ex plosion. In the rear yard, s< 1
lance from the scene, was a boiler wreck that
told Its own story. It was removed sev
eral feet from the main building and
its attachments, but the suggestion
was uppermost that It had played a
most important part In tbe fatal drama. It
was stretched in a telling position upon a pile
of bricks, while Its numerous fines protruded
from the head like the disordered pipes of an
organ. Us head had also been torn off, and its
sides Indented. Other indications equally
suggestive were noticed, but were not dwell - _
upon by tbe crowd, in Its anxiety to learn the
particulars of tbe catastrophe itself.
Tbe fact settled that a terrific explosion bad
taken place, the attention waa addressed to the
cause that led to It, and the immediate results.
It did uot require much time to discover that
it bad been fatally attended, nor that it had
damiged seriously the poperty of tbe mill
it*-*-1f in addition to this, there were other
effects equally as serious In their nature, but
of less general Importance.
The explosion was one that Is liable to
happen at any time to any boiler. It was

It was soon discovercl that the middle
boiler that exploded hid shot forward through
the three rooms, tearing through over sixty
Inches of brick, and leaving Its track marked
with destruction of both lifo and property, it
fell beyond the pump room, seventy seven feet,
by actual measurement, from tbe scene of the
explosion. It passed through the three rooms
like a swift winged usetlor, and caught In Its
path the unfortunate engineer who was stand
ing directly In its line
Gibson, at the time the explosion happened,
was In the act of starting on the engiucs. He
had loosened the valves, and had his baud

The steam gauge whtn examined, immedi
ately after the accident, showed a register of
ninety-five pounds, the limit at which tbe
governors were fixed. The water glasses were
half filled all around, Indicating that there
waa a sufficient quantity in the boiler*. The
only supposition remaining to account for
the boiler. It Is thought that the
head of the bolter that exploded
was wesk at a point above the water Hue, and
that giving away suddenly, the head toro
away, and was blown over the building to the
street. The combined tendency of the steam

scribed. The position of Gibson was in a di
rect line with the middle boiler. The diagram
given above will show all the points.
The damages are variously estimated from
110.000 to 120,000. In addition to the machinery
ojured and destroyed, tbe damage to the
property is considerable. It will require two
months’ time to repair everything and place
the mill In running order.
In the meantime operatives are thrown
out of employment. There Is not a detail con •
nected with tbe casualty that is not tragic, and
that did not Invoke the sympathy of every one
who visited the scene yesterday. Following
tbe gasoline explosion of Friday, It almost as
sumes the shape of a coincidence.
No time will be lost in getting things in or-

age, and everything will be puaned as itpldly
as possible.

the audience were stilled by the strange r*

next minute a panicky feeling overtook the

tbe major from his position. He waa then
taken to the barracks and locked up.
