THE TRLEGBAPH AND MESSENGER: FRIDAY, JUNE 5, 1885.
DEATH OF MR. DAY.
One of th«t oiueat Landmarks of Ma
con.
Mr. Charles Day. who died In Brunswick
Ian week, was born In Camilla, where the
earlier poition of his boyhood was spent. We
do not k low his exact age, but believe he was
bom about the first year of this century, and
relate same events of his early life frem our
recollection of an interesting conversation
with him In 1179.
He removed to Georgia at an early age and
lived b< th lu Brunswick and Savannah, with
a mercantile house who had a contract with
the United States government to furnlah pro
visions for the army of General Jackson In
1807, which rendesvoused at Fort Hawkins
and Hartford,on the Ocmulgee, preparatory to
their expedition In West Florida agalnat the
hostile Indians, who had been Incited r gainst
the whites by the Bpanlsh, through theirj,
Agents Ambrlster and Arbuthnot. The exe
cution of these agents by Jackson forms an
4 ant part in American history.

Mr. Day, at the age of 17, traversed this part
! Georgia on horseback, purchasing and de

portion encamped at Fort Hawkins were
transported to Hartford—longsince oneof the
dead townH of Georgia-on flat boats They
then marched across the country into Alabama
and Florida.
Mr. Day returned to the Georgia seaboard,
and wo are lost as to his history until 1830 he
came to Macon and engaged in the navigation
of the Ocmulgee with Mr. James R. Butts,
mid* r the firm name of Pay «& Butts. The
firm dissolving on the appr'ireh of a rail-1
road from the set, Mr. Day commenced
the commission business about 1841, and after
ward confined himself to the purchato and
shipment of ootton. Having taken Thurston

Raiford Dyer escaped from the chain-gang

had served oiit three montha of the time. Dyer
was sent from Lumnkin Superior Court for

also. He had served only ten days of his
time.
On the 28th oi last month Sheriff Westcott
was handed the following notes by Henry
Davis, a negro man, who represented that they
had been given to him by one George Smith, a
section keeper and detective:

And the sad words fell from his lips so thin—

Close by the office fire there sat,
A well dressed citizen, sleek and fat.
Soft waa the chair as the throne might be,
But he mournfully played with the office key, June and July....

capture Davla, at he had gotten away after
Sheriff Westcott had refused to pay him tha

A Serious Case of Poisoning.
There is not a guest who ha« partaken of the
hospitality of Lanier House who does not
know and love little Ethel Stewart, the bright
and interesting child o! Mr. J. S. Stewart, for*

A fe w days ago Eth. 1 found in her mother’s

for destroying bags. Almost aa soon as she
swallowed the concoction she waa taken vio
lently sick, and for awhile it waa thought she
could not recover. Dr. Hammond was called
in and did every thing to relieve her sufferings.
She continued In a critical condition until
Tuesday evenlngwhen she began to recover
from the effect*? Yesterday she waa able to
be up and to greet once more her many

that in 1858 purchased through T. R. Bloom
tho famous ootton crop raised by Jo*; Bond of
ever 2,00j bales at over $iw,t00 at one sale.
The popularity of the house and its exten
sive transactions wore >uch that on the death
of Mr. Frazer the old firm title was continued
Mr. Trenholm, being at the head, and on the
retirement of Mr. Memlnger. was appointed
Secretary of tho Treasury of tho Coniederate
States.
In 1850 or 1851 Mr. Day removed to New
York. A few year* later he withdrew from
his Macon house,Jleaving Mr. R oom successor,
to a hue business. About 1857 Mr. Day met
with business reverses, but he settled with his
creditors In that conscientious spirit of hon

of war, thzt tho business of the company waa

M r. Day had a large quantity of lands In and
arouml Brunswick and waa much interested
in the construction of the Macon and Bruns

of the war ho was offered I100.COJ for his inter

has been living in that city since, frequently
visiting Macon, to which he was devotedly
attached, until declining health from old age

refused to give right ot way. We hope he will

Baked egg plant is a very nice dish
and does not require so much preparation
as when fried. Choose a rather large one,
cut transversely and make deep incisions
with a sharp knife, taking care not to
break the skin. Place tbe slices in a drip

together, and pour over them half a cup
salted water. When baked, lay them

little pepper and s-rve.
A spider which was caught and put
under close observation was weigued

found, says the London Standard, that at
the tame rate of contumptlon a human

a whole fat steer for breakfast, while lor
diuner he would require a steer together
with half a dozen sheep, and for supper
two bullocks, eight sheep and four hogs,
and then a little later in the evening he
could "top off” with about four ban^r of
