The Line to Be Connected If n Guarantee
Can Be Secured.
A few days ago the Telegraph mentioned
that a movemeut was on foot to bring the cltl*a
of Southwest Georgia Into more direct com
munication with Macon by means of a tele
phone line. The advantages arising from such
an arrangement were fully set forth, together
with an announcement of the fact that Mana
ger Mullenlx, of the Southern Bell Telephone
Company, had gone to Atlanta to consult with
the authorities there, in regard to the estab
lishment of the line. The article attracted the
attention of the business men here, and
brought to their notice the numerous advan
tages that would arise from such an arrange
ment. The interest of many was enlisted in
the movement, and numerous plans for the
completion of the enterprise were suggested
and d scussed. , „
Manager Mullenlx returned to the city Bat
urdsy night, and was seen yesterday by a re
porter ot the Telegraph lu reply to the In-
- which he
. ... g to build
the line, connecting Macon with the cities of
Southwest Georgia, if a proper guarantee
could be secured. But few lines of such
character have ever been constructed in the
South, and they have seldom paid. The sta
tions, as a general rule, ate placed so far
apart that it is rendered expensive to keep
them up. In view of this the company would
require a guarantee si to the poluts at which
the stations wonld be located.
The Southern Bell Telephone Company is a
brsneb of the American Telephone Company,
which owns a'most all of the territory for the
United States. The Instruments are controlled
by the American and to that com
pany the Southern Is compelled to
psy a steep percentage on
all the territory covered and used by the
Southern. Unless, therefore, the advantages
offered the Southern for the construction of
such lines were very great, the inducement to
build them would be bib all. This results from
the heavy expense and the rercentage paid to

Queer Coir oldtnee*.
Life is full of coincidence*. They nre met
with at all times and In all places. Some
times they occur under the most peculiar ctr-
custaoces. and at momenta when least ex
pected or wante:.
Some time ago two men were found on the
street by the police officers completely intoxi
cated. They were so drunk that they did not
know where the* were or who they were.
They were found In different portions of
the city by different officers. They were
taken to the ban acks and locked in separate
cells. Tho next morniug they sobered up and
recognized each other. One was tbe owner of
a large plantation In Southwest Georgia, and
the other was his overseer.
A similar coincidence occurred Saturday.
Among tbe arrests that were made on that
day were two excursionists, who were found
by tbe officers in a most dep* —
ble state of intoxication. As
tho above Instance the parties were found at
different times In different places. They were,
however, given tbe same cell at tho barracks.
The next morning tho recognition was
humorous. Both were from the same town,
one a young man of aome promluence and
the other a middle-aged gentleman. They
made a pledge not to give each other away
when they reached home.
