Second State Tournament Conducted by
the Colored comnanles of Ceorgla.
Yesterday the city was turned over to the
colored firemen. It was the occasion of the
second State tournament, and was a gala day
for them. To say that it was a success, would
poorly express the manner in which It passed.
Whenever the darkles enter into anything of
the sort they are generally enthusiastic, and
manage to put heart and soul into It The
tournament yesterday and iia many features
will long he remembered by tbem

The committee appointed to solicit subscrip

of thedty yesterday morning, and at 12 o’clock
metattho establishment oi 8. T. Coleman &

committees.
Tho result of the canvas was very gratifylog
indeed, and showed that tho sub-commlttecs
had labored faithfully in th * cause. The suc

performed waa manifested in the result of
their work, which showed at once that a suffi

the holding of the fair. In fact, the entire
amount required of the city by the fair asso-

nieit things I ever saw In my life was a game
of base ball played the other afternoon be
tween the Jacksons and the Indian Springs,
two crack colored clubs. The members we e
cotton-choppers for the mostpart and had left
their work In the cotton field for much harder
work In the ball field..
The game was played in the flat between the
creek and the sprlug, and the suu shone down
hot enough to alirost melt the ball. They
started at 2 o'clock with an umpire that didn't
know a strike from a barrel of molasses, and
he waa so rotten that they dismissed him be
fore the first luulng was finished. The ser
vices of five different umpires were called in
before the game was concluded.
The catcher for the Indian 8prin{S was as
black a* they can get m this couutry without
being made up iuto ink, and wore a
blue »kuli cap. He s -oodb-hiud the batter in
the attitude of a professional. NVneu he held
up bis hands for the ball they looked like two
utchforfti dancing in the air. The backstop
: .misted of a number of small boys, wno had
a scramble for the ball wheuever it passed
tho catcher.
The pitcher waa strong of arm, and be sent
the balls over the home plate a whizzing.
Once the catcher held up bis pitchforks and
dangled them In the air as It he was deter
mined to win the game all by himself. Then the
ball came. It was hot beemsetbe pitcher was
mad with the umpire. It Just grazed tho bat
enough to mace a report, and then it passed
through the catcher's pitchfork hands aud
ker-blap! it ctruck against his mouth. The
hands went up against the dislocated Jaw and
broken ranki of teeth, and the blue akull cap
made a dart for the creek near by. The
crowd followed, and the unfortunate man
recovered coucclousneaa after a copious baa-
t'zlng. Another mau took his place and the
game proceeded. Whenever a ball was knock
ed Into the creek It was called a Wow-ell” and
the way the umpire yelled It out cannot be
described. They played sixteen innings, the
Jacksons winning lu a score of 27 to 17.

Sarah W iliams In Umbo*
Some time ego, it will be remembered, a
negro named Sarah Williams, employed as a
nurse by Mr. K. 8. Chamllsa.Uvlng on TtUntU
Square, without any provocation and with the
most malicious Intent, seized the hand of Mr.
Cbambliaa’ Infant with her month and bit it
until the blood flowed quite freely. The croti
act aroused the Indignation of Mr. Chambliss,
and e>ery effort was mads by him to capture
her. She escaped, however and has not been
heard of since. Last night et a late hour aha
was arrested by officers Daniel and MeClnakv,
who have been quietly working np the affair.
She la the sister of Green Klckeieon, and waa
found at her home on the Macon and Western
railroad near Ylneville. It waa a nice piece
of work on the part of the officers.
