CcTBBkR, Ga„ Augnat 1C.—Rev. John
Knight ia a Baptist minister of good stand-
log. and lives two mileo south ot Watd'i,
In the eastern portion ol this county. Bis
two children, a girl ot nine and a boy ot
seven years, were lent to a school two
miles distant. On Wednesday morning,
when three -quarters ot ■ mile from borne
on their way to acbcol, and white pats*

baited In tbe road by n burly negro, who
laid violent bands npon tbn little girl
and dragged ber to the woods. Her
■creams only added moio terror to tbe
little boy who bad been commanded to
remain in the road. A noise of some
kind caused the negro to leave the chil
dren suddenly, hut not before they bad
noticed a wnite spot on bis leg. Tnoy r„-
tornsd home and reported wbat bad nap-
pened and soon a posse of men, ludignaui
with such proceedings, wss organiztU and
went lnpnr.nitolone answering neareet
tbe description. Soon they pounced upon
one, a negro by tbe name of Henry Davis,
a tenant on or e of Col. Crittenden's 11*0-
tation near. He (Davls) when approacbed
was cutting wood, and when he saw the
crowd advance, raid to another negro
by, "Here, take my axe, they are alter
me, I must go." Sure enough they did
get him. He was carried to Wards and
bad a commitment trial before Dr. John
Bridgemau, justice of the peace. Tbeiii-
tle girl teeing tbe negro, said "Tbat is be;
now see if a scar is noton hia right irk”
He was accordingly stripped and tbe
scar was found as Declared. Upon this
with other evidence, he was commiitec
and ordered to jail in our town for a trial
at the November court.
The tndignaut crowd present wanted t
mob him men and there, but tbe fatbei
begged them not, asking tbat tbe law take
its course in the matter. The prisoner
with sccompanying guards, left Ward'r
and strived in our city at 1 o'clocjc a. to ,
when he was plsced in oar coumy jail
He remained very quietly in his ceil noiil
Saturday night about 12 o'clock, when a
mob ol about one hundred masked mu
approached tbe jaii and insisted on tbe
jailor, Mr. Skipper, for the keys, wbicii
were refused. They thereupon begsi
pounding the door with crow-bars uud
irons until tbe uuiside entrance wss gain-
ed. Mr. Skipp-r knew tbat tbe mob was
bound to have the prisoner, and as he ban
live otber birks in jail besides the ■ ne
wanted, he coneenteo to let the entrance
of tbe negro Dave's cell be perfected so
that be might retain bis otber prhonem
and keep the batldlDg from being torn to
pieces. Tbe mob secured tbe negro ami
tus’Cbed him down to a bridge nor tbe
railroad where a half inch rope was tied
sronnd bis neck at one end and the other
fastened to the banister of the btidgi
Another rope securely fastened his arms
behind him and bit feet together. He evi
dently must have been pushed overboard,
as hia neck was broken, and from a pear-
ancea, be died without a struggle. Ou his
body was a paper pinned, with tbe f ollow
ng inscription;
"We do not want to take the law in our
own bands, bnt this shall baihefateof
perpetrators of such Crimea.

Hi* body was (airly riddled wilh bullets,

about five and a half feet in height and
bad an unueutl p essant face for a negro
Coroner Coleman summoned a jury and
held an inquest, the verdict of which was
In eccordance with tbe (acta named.
The body was cut down eleven minutes
to 12 o'clock, before the passenger train
from Montgomery arrived. It -a- plscid
in a collin and presented to bis father who
arrived on the 3 p. m. train from his home
at Ward's.
Tbe crowd that beheld the body during
the day nnmbeied several hundred. Many
more of tbe colored population viewing
him than did the whites.
Tbe law abiding citizene of onr town are
by no meana supporters of this mob law,
and are worried much tbat a (aw ahuuid

to tbe jailor, it ia proper to atata tnat he
did all in bis power to quell tho indiguam
mob. but hlatfitirts proved fruitless as It
was Impossible for him alone to cope with
about oue hundred men. There teems to
be no indignation caused among the peo
ple on account of the negro’s fate, yei
many condemn the way in which It was
done.
Fresh Fashion Notes,
Colored black beads must bo sewn on
with ailk, as cotton changes with wear.
Wool canvas costumes are very etyl-
and are trimmed with wool lace match-
ing the dress in color.
Dress of printed cotton materials,
each as satteen toile-de-Vichy, percale
and others, are made with plain iklrta.
The demand for Oriental. Spanish
and Eicurial lace ia still unabated, al
though these are dividing honors with
tbe various coloted wool lacea.
Tbe old-fashioned buffs in cotton are
fashionably used for children this sea
son and make charmingly with the
white and ecrue embroideries for yokca
and ruffles.
Some of the prettiest dresses for lit-
tie girls are made in strawberry, or old
old aanline, in the tiniest checks, in
tlonse styles, trimmed with tinted iace
and bows of ribbon.
A pretty "dog collar,” suitable for
the moat dressy wear, is made of pale
blue velvet completely covered with
>esrl beads and finished with a dainty
tow ol velvet ribbon to match, Any
•hade of velvet and ribbon may be
chosen.
Oold and brown beads look well on
brown net; two or more shades of bine
or gold and silver on bine net; dull
beads on black net. Various colored
beads may also be used on black or
white net.
Very elegant little visites are pr
in thick
. Often tbe
sleeve is entirely made of lace em
broidered with jet. Tbe reverse ia also
seen occasionally, the body of (he
mantle of lace or brocaded silk.
A handsome mantle, suitable for
carriage-wear, is a deep circular of thin
cloth of the rich dark red tint called
Nacarat. It ia gathered at the top on
to a shoulder-piece, which forms a
sort of hood; the fronts are completed
by a plain plastron of silk or velvet.
Slits for the arms are plsced on each
side of this plastron.
Most charming little coats for girls
of three to five are made of cream
wool in the form of a short close-fitting
sack, deepened by a scant flonnee,
which forms the skirt, and npon which
is laid upright above the hem a fine,
wide border of cream woolen lace. A
deep Mother Hubbard collar of the
wool ia edged with yak lace to match,
in a graduated width, forming a cape
which covers the shoulders and partly
the arms,otherwise protected by sleeves
with cuffs of lace.
