For many years past irregularities
and shortcomings of all kind in the
State government have been hushed
up or smoothed over “for the party.”
It is about time that something was be
ing done for the State. We present a
matter that should be the subject of
immediate and searching investigation
by a I-egialatlvecommittec, empowered
to send for persons and papers. In
1859 an act was passed by the Legisla

and a defiance of law, we have seldom
seen a stronger specimen than the fol

In 18G0 the Legislature paused an act
»pli , !KSuSteS*bSt granting the same privileges, on the
same terms, to the Western railroad.
On December 30th, 1860, an act was
passed making the distance four miles
in place of one.
The Georgia Pacific railroad wss not
incorporated by the Legislature, but by
filing its charter in the Secretary of
State’s office. The Georgis Pacific did
not have the right to use the track of
the Western and Atlantic railroad.
Therefore, in I860, an act was passed
to authorize one road to consolidate
with another and to purchase fran
chises, etc. We merely refer to the
acts, they msy be found in tiio statute
books.
It wss generally known that Colquitt
was nervously anxious for fhe passage
of this act.
After it had become a law,the follow
ing record was made of the proceed
ings in the executive office:
