such a population,
The best place for Georgians is in
Georgia. If under these sktes, among
these hills and pleasant valleys, and
among his kin and friends one can not
make a living and accumulate some
thing, he would be lost in the West.
If among the people whom ho knows
and in the midst of the conditions to
which he is accustomed he cqn not be
happy, he will not be apt to
find contentment among stran
gers of radically different habits
and customs that conflict with his edu
cation and instincts. We do not know
of a better country In the world than
Georgia, and Middle Georgia is the
best part of it. Bull from Florida to
Tennessee and from Carolina to Ala
bama there is society good enough for
anybody, and too good to be disturbed
and broken up by emigration schemes.
Our advice to Georgians is—stick to
your homes. The storms that have
passed over you have fortified you
against all lesser evils, and the dawn
of a new day long promised is here at
last. Money is cheap, crops are boun
tiful, and political oppression has van
ished. Live on here through the new
bright day, and when evening comes,
He down to rest upon tho warm bosom
of the "old mother.” You cannot
find a more honored spot.

The friends of General Toombs have
been pained and mortified at the lan
guage attributed to him by a wander
ing interviewer and subsequently wired
to the Northern press.
In the Atlanta Constitution of Sun

lowing card:

There it a sadness about this card
that will tonch all Georgiani. Mr,
Toombs foelt that his race of life it

protect him from intrusion. Hu

The Nephew of Hie Uncle.
The wires make public that a nephew
of Rostoe Conkling recently attended
a frolic on the United States man-of-
war Tennessee. While there he had
hia susceptibilities outraged by a Ueu- :
tenant, who Indulged in disrespectful
language of Gen. Grant. Going ashore
young Mr. Conkling chal enged the
lieutenant to deadly combat. The lieu
tenant declined', giving as a reason
that the rules of the navy forbid duel
ing. Whereupon young Mr. Conkling
declared his intention to shoot the
lieutenant.
This is the tale set afloat, with the
remark that the name of the lieutenant
is unknown.
We have a superabundance of lieu
tenants in the navy and a paucity of
ships, but there cannot be a great many
lieutenants aboard the Tennessee.
Their names can readily be obtained.
The whole thing sounds like a tale
for the marines. A special correspond
ent has been airing his imagination,
perhaps, to vent a grudge against naval
officers or to advertise young Mr. Conk-
ling.
As we can well spare a naval officer
or two, and the country might afford
o worry along without the nephew, as
it has done without his nncle, Secre
tary Whitney might suspend the rules
for this occasion. Naval officers used
to be famous dueltata In the olden days.
Perhaps the lieutenant may bo able to
recall somethlngof ancient prowess and
skill in the pastime. Give the navy a
show.

The Southwestern and Western idea
of Sunday seems to be extending
throughout New England. Recently a
fashionable party availed itself of the
opportunity offered by the Sabbath
