TIIE TELEGRAPH AND MESSENGER: FRIDAY, SEP ( EMBER 4, 1885.
A THRILLING NARRATIVE.
The Firm Refuinl of the Cant*© Chris
tian* to E.nbrace Ulamlam.
London Dally News,
Cairo. July 23.—I have received from
Father Bononl the following narrative of
his eiperiencei In captivity with the
Mahdi:
When the Mahdi marched upon Khar
toum 1 was with twelve European aarviv*
ink member! of the mimion. The priest,
throe nuns and one catechist died of star
vation ami bad treatment. I, with a mis
sion composed of Padre Yonself, Orwal*
der, the layman called Oniseppe, Regnslo,
a mechanic, and three eons,established a
church at Qebel Deli, three days’ journey
from Obeid.
We had fixed to escape on the 14tb of
Se^ienibir. 1882. A. man cal'ed Kbalvl Eff.
a n,i itary officer, informed the. rebels of
our intentions. We had foolishly entrust^
ed hint with our secret. Thrreopon El Mek
Omar completely surrounded us atid emt
us a summons to surrender, stating if we
did not we abould b© put to tba sword. At
this juuctnre, the officer commanding the
Egyptian troops a d all tile me* 1 , who
were there to protect undeclared for Ma
homet Achmet, the Mabdl. Then seizing
their rifles and ammunition, they jawed
the zerebae and deliberately wen * over to
the Arabs We determined tood'er to but
render on condition that our hvta should
be spared, and that we thou d be allowed
to proceed to E*ypt unmolested. These
terms were granted, and we became pris
oners. All our cattle, sheep, farming im
plements, books and clothes were seiz°d.
We were bound and marched on to Ma
homet Achmet, who waa then before
Obied.
There were isvea of os, and we were led
before Mahomet Achmet. He informed
us that it would be necesiary for us imme
diately to embrace Islamism. We replied
firmly: ‘‘We cannot dotuia thing, nor
forsake our holy religion. God forbids
it; and even were we to do this and be
come Moslems in garb and outward form,
our hearts would remain unchanged."
This bold reply greatly irritated Mahome*
Achmet He cried; “Hark ye, accursed
infidel*! To-morrow is Friday. I give
you time to ri fit ct. If you have not era
braced I-tamtam by the Hslng of tomcr-

and gildtd the edges of the few

vast yellow sanded plain—we looked upon
it, as'we supposed, for the last lime. Kev*
e? again were we to see a son rise; oor

done b-foie us, were to die martyrs (or the

that long line, marching with firm step
and heaoa uptight, the Arabs brandished
their bog two-edg«d sword* over our
headr, curttingus as we patard; and now
we readied the spot where Mahomet Acb-

He was mounted on a magnific?ntdrom*

neither would they deny their Savior.
Same time after this these wretched wo
men were made to go along on foot eimoet
nude to Bahat. The Mahdi was
there, and they were brought be
fore him. Alss! their frail nature
could bold out no longer. Their strength
of mind as well as body was gone. Driven
to desperation, to avoid greater degrade-
lion and insult*, they eftoted to emtrice
Istanbul. They were then taken as wives
by three Greeka—wno themselvea had be-'

CmciKHATi, August 29—Tbe sparring
match between John L.Bnllivtn and Dom

tract ao great a number of people as bad
been expected. At 4 o'clock, when It was
thought the match would begin, there
were not more than 6,000 people atChester
Park. The men were not lU-behsved, nor
did they manliest impatience at the delay
in opening the exhibition. From 4:30
till S o’clock the time wss spent in short
boxing conti its that served to keep tbe at
tention of the crowd and to even awaken
enthusiasm wnen one man was knocked
senseless on tbe ropes.
McCsfirry seemed to be tha most popu
lar of the two principal pugilists, judging
irom the demonstration whan they pre
sented themselves. Win. Tate, of Toledo,
was choaen aa referee and the fight bega t
at 6:21. MoCxflrey was savers! times
knocked down and et other tlmoa klipped
down to avoid punishment, but he clung
to Bullivan when they came to close quit
ters in a desperate clinch, and that ea-
cxied strata punishment. At the end of
the sixth round McCaffrey eeemed to be
in tbe best condition. Uonangemedirrsh
wind, while Bullivan showed signs of die-
tress. Inatantly there was a shout all over
tbe vast crowd, which by this time seemed
to have swelled to 7, 00, in I onor of Mc
Caffrey, who they all supposed had won
tbe match. He bad stood up against 8al-
livan through tlx rounds and seemed able
and willing to go on to a finish. He was
overwhelmed with congratulations, while
Snlllvan was left to be cared lor by bla

bat alter some time, when three fourths of
the people bad started for the train, and
while the remainder were in loud discus
sion ot the merits of the match, Mul-
doou made an announcement, which only
a few beard, that the referee
had decided to give tbe match to BnlUvan,
on the ground that he hed made the
greater number of points. Thia announce
ment was wholly inaudible at the press

culated. Among these was that it was
given because of a foul. Bullivan left the
platform with no demonstrations In hla
honor, bat McOaflrey's Iriends were jubi
lant, notwithstanding the referee's adverse
decision, and they lilted him to their
ahoalders and bore him amid the cheers
of the spectators to hla carriage. The de
rision was decidtdy unpopular, probably
owing to the donbiful understanding ot
tbe terms. It was generally supposed
that Bullivan was to knock MeUaflrey ont
in six ronndt or less in order to 1*n,
and McCaflrey himself stated after the
m itch was over that he thought to. Us
even wanted to finish bnt that was lmpoa
