schemes havo been frequently exposed
by tho press of the country. The pas

The recent tragedy in New York city
has made an end of one tough citizen,
and has made it probable that another
will be put to work for the public good.
The New York Herald gives this ac

Holland wai ushered Into a dingy little

Reminiscences by “Old Chronicle."
Major James 6mlth was one of the
prominent cttlzena of Macon forty or fifty
years ago. He came hither from Jouea,
which respectable old connty baa contrib
uted to the city and to Bibb county many
of oar beat citizens. He was a lawyer of
profession and he owned a fine well stock
ed cotton plantation iu Houston county
near Echeconnee creek, ubont twelve or
fifteen miles from town. Having ample
means of support, he was well able to en
joy tbe "otium cum dignitatc" of a retired
practitioner dariog the declining years of
hla life. He was a very substantial man,
not only as to property bnt nature had
given him a powerful physical frame. Be
ing upwards of six feat high, hla ereot
bearing, broad face, prominent and large
nose gave him an imposing appearance.
A dogged determination and pertinacity
of purpose were hia distinguishing traits,
and might have been accounted indica
tions that some of hia ancestors were
"born in Ireland." True to the "blood
which tella,” wherever an emigrant from
the Emerald Isle mokes hla home, it was
an uphill business to attempt to drive him.
But es to whether he could bo moved or
persuaded by other methods, we shall see.

Childs: Just before Grant started on his
journey Around the world, tbe writer
hereof heard him discuss the same ques
tion in Mr. 1 ,Childs's presence. General
Grant reviewed the contest for the creation
of the electoral commission and the con
test before and in the commission, very
fully and with rare candor, and the chief
significance of his view was In the fact, as
he stated it, that he expee’ed from the her
ginning until the final judgment, that the
electoral vote ot Louisiana would be
awarded to Tiiden. He spoke ot Booth
Carolina and Oregon as justly belonging
to Hayes; of Florida as reasonably doubt
ful, and of Louisiana as for Tiiden.
Grant's burial place is historic ground.
A contemporary eeys: “It is said that
Riverside Park was a favorite dally drive
oi Washington, and that an historic party,
including Get:, and Mrs. Washington and
Thomas Jefferson, made a trip to the
heights and lunched there. In this neigh
borhood Loula Philippe, afterwards King
of France, and Joseph Bonaparte, who had
been King of Bpain, lived in retirement.
Loul. I’hillippo taught a school there in the
early years of tbs century. When the
l’rince ot Wales visited New York he was
entertained by Mayor Fenta-do Wood at
his home iu this part oi Manhattan Island,
and went over the ground with hla bolt
