■■■—mm&m TRI WEEKLY HEWS. Sjrs. SWEET, ••• ...•••-Eifitor. ALBANY, HA., FEBRUARY WtMM? J'mKM t—This is » gloriousTiri-ue,*nd one which wo vronld recommend to our readers iu these days, of gloom and uncer tainty, No neir development* hare been made in reference to the military despotism destined for tho South, other than President Johnson has decided not to tako advantage of the “ pooket veto,” but sent in bis meaaage vetoing thia outrageous scheme on yester day. Let u> bids oar time, justice will not always sloop, ajul tho day oi retribution will not be less terrific because of delay. Wo can ply all tho private avocations of life, and we should exert every energy to make a sub ficiency to live within ouraaivaa, Let ua maintain our integrity and honor by not giving up uuiltr these depressing circum stances that everything is lost, "There is life in the old land yet." A Tumi.—Tho National Intelligencer, one of the ablest papers in tho United States, tievsr uttered a truth more forcibly tlinn when it laid that liberty is imperilled always by the anyone^ It droop* invaria bly under a forest of bristling steel. It is eruslied out under the iron lice! of the sold ier. Not the free will cower around tho headquarters of a petty despot to solicit that justice which should bu freo to ill in the courts established by tliu people, and only tyrants would substitute tho arbitrary mandate of the officer for tho uuthoritstiye decision of the jiumc. And they uru ty rants, uu luutbyr what their profession, who would quarto^soldiers amidst the homes of the people lo dispense tlint justice which should conic, not IVoih t lie edge of the-sword, but tile verdict 0t n jury of one’s couutry- men. liiimvx & Wii.iim.sn’s Kaii.tint.—Tb t Intelligencer publishes the list of sufferer, in (Ids unfortunate affair. The full amount foots up t3U,U0S 47, with probabilities that it may be increased by indebtedness in Now York. The Intelligencer says; . “ It is due l’crino Ill-own, Esq., to state that his conduct in the unfortnnnto allliir lias bfrjm of a strictly lionorable cliaracter, nod an* Ii us to meet the lu-oiopt'approval of tin' Interested parties, tin tho lin t intima tion that nil was not right, he placed the hooks of tlie hank open to rigid investiga tion, rendered every assistance iu his-power towards nrrit ing at.a,true slntoof facts, uod by his every act has proven himself worthy of tho high estimate this community hail placed upon him iu previous yeurs as an iioxkrriiajf 1” Dim New Press.—We have found it neooesary to make additions to our office to meet the demands of our friends, and have just received, and are putting up, a large lino Cylinder Pow er IV as, This will great ly ihoililalu the publication of til*paper, and enable ill to.present as nice an appearance a« any paper published in tho State. Ami now, reader, as we arc doing everything in ouv power to furnish you with a first-clan paper, will you not leud u helping baud tutd do something for ua Some of tho most promincul cititens of this and adjoining • comities have decided that we shall have at least 1000 subscribers to our Tri-woekly by the first of July. This could readily lie done if you would taka hold ol' tho matter, and ask your neighbor to whom you lend your paper, to snbseritie. AHsmarkaiile Wimkb.—A Northern oxebangosays: “Tho natural phenomena of the last few weeks well deserve the con sideration of atwoapkerio philosophers.— Tremendous (alls of snow in nearly all parts of tho country, alternations ol excessive cold and almost summer heat, and destructive freshets in various sections from tbs ex trema Bast to tho \lfeateru frontier, have combined to render tho winter of .memorable iu the annals of meteorology." The Louisville Journal says: “ The jud ical leaders think that their political pros perity depends upon making the North bate tho South as bitterly as possible. And so their chief political employment is to lie against, slander, vHlify, denounce, libel, ca lumniate, curse the Southern Slates and the .Southern people with every breath." North Cardins complains bitterly ofdit- tress end poverty. Destitutionis said to ■he evident iu all part* wfthc State, and the .hill recently passed by the Legislature post poning the payment of debts for twelve months, will afford but partial relief Tub Dsily Omio.v.—Wc have received the fintnumber of this paper, which lias just been published i u the city of Atlanta I* Scruggs, Esq., formerly of this . Air. Scruggs proposes lo tnsko the t” “independent in everything, and ir nothing,” and brings to the din- f. this.duty some e^pettancs in eii- tender to jiim ihe.co vtetin lour best wishes fer the —[Columbus Son. / arrived in Memphis ou iharrixaierrated quite a sen- dshdunced Uutleras a pbadit for |ibel, and said suit bad.bean history of Napoieou L, and his coiemoora- « ties. ^Active In a very different way and in °™' I Adjanraed Meeting Tbs Planters’ Meeting of last Satnaday was adjoamed over to next Saturday, at 10 o’clock, at which time they desira to have a full attendance from tho adjoining counties. Owing to the shortness of. tho notice last week, bat few ontside of tbe county received the news in time to bo present. We hope everybody will be attendance on Saturday next, and that a permanent organisation may be effected, Tho eflbrt is seconded by almost every paper in the State, and organ isations of similar abanotar recommended in erety part of tbs commonwealth, A Free Tress, Among tbe many misfortunes that will befall tho South ee aho returns under mili tary rale under the Military Bill, will bo tbe destruction of tho freedom of the press | for who, says an able writer, ever heard of a free presa flourishing under the deadly shadow of tbo bayonet T It sinks under its arbitrary rulo like » shackled ircerasn within a sunless dungeon. Them is no freedom where there is uo discussion, and there can be no discussion when a colonel’s pod or a lioutcnant’s order may strip a mail of his rights. There is hardly A solitary amend ment of the Constitution, whether relating to a free press, to free speech, to tbo right of assemblage, to (reedom of person or trout search, to presentment by a grand jury or a jury trial, to bearing unns, or tbe re served rights of the people, that this mill tnry bill docs got utterly aud shamelessly disregard. In days post having had some experience and that uot the most the pleasant, in editing a newspaper with “ shoulder-straps" sitting ns censor, wo shall coniiucnco in time to ho guarded in what wc say, but slmll, as wc humbly remarked when a great Major-Gen oral had us before him, and shaking his list iu our face, “ wo will try to maintain an in dependent course," Newspaper Critics. These arc to bo found upon every street corner, says an Uxclinngc, in every hotel, business house, railroad car, private or pub lie parlor, steiuiihont anil bur-room, and the criticism uttered by that mimurous clast of wiseacres are both learned nml amusing.— The last one of them is firm in tbe belief that liia morning paper falla far abort of what ho could make it. Sometimes it will do tolerably well, but os a general thing lie finds it a miserably tame affair, Tho most severe of these oritics arc found among Uio ladies, for tbo dear, sweet creatures are so capneioua and hard to please iu s news, paper *s in all things .else, excepting perhaps the item of husbands I Hut wo can find it in our heart to cxcuso them, severe though they bo on morning pa|iers, and tho bard worked iudiridunjs who labor iu that tread mill. Homo ouo sensibly suggests, . that considering how many good ndvisers editors have, is it not singular that there ran be found so few good editors. But perhaps a careful investigation of the matter would disclose the fart that what might prove men of flue, editorial ability are spoiled by haring too many advisers instead of too few!- There is a vast amount ot advice which the receiver .would do better to pocket than to practice. The larger number of advisers, so far ns to our observation goes, regard mill'll writing and good editing ns nearly synonymous. There is no greater mistake, aud none more fatal ill the successful edit iog of a general newspaper. Uenjiman Franklin has the credit of saying llinttho “best editor is scissors,” by which he probab ly meant that tho editor who recognises the. fact of their being in the .world many good writers hesiilea himself, and avails himself of the good tliiugs they have writen will make the most interesting and accepta ble newspaper. Men who know most about making newspapers, do not estimate au ed itor’s labors by the number of columns he writes, but by the completeness and finish of his paper as a whole. The following prargraph, writcu by an Englishmen 0 f much experience, contain the gist .of the whole. ” A good editor, or coinjctcnt new 1 _ conductor, is liko a general ora poet—Ur, not made.— Exercise and experience gin- facility, but the qualification is innate, orit is net er manifested. Ou the LouJou daily papetw, all the great historian., novelists, poets, essayists, and writers of travels, have been tried and nearly every one 1ms failed. ‘ I can,’said the late editor of the I-oudon Times, * iiud any number of men of genius to write for me, but very seldom one mao of common sense.’ Nearly all successful' editors are of this description. A good editor seldom writes much for his paper; he reads, judges, selects, dictates, alters and cpndgsyc*; and after doing all this well, he hir. but liUlc time lor composition. Jo write for a paper is one thing—to edit a paper is another.” -77— Active Old Aue.—Count Philip Scgur whoso account of the disastrous Hussion campaign “ LATEST BY TELEGRAPH. • — PBIV>TE DISPATCHES TO TUB ALBANY K*W8.] HEW TOBK GOLD AND COTTON MARKET Liverpool, Feb. 22.—Evening—Cottyn heavy, and'declined materially daring the day.
