LOSS OVER $150.000! It is our painful duty to record one of the most destructive fires that our city lm» ever witnefcd. The loss of property is imiiieuM*, and at this particular season falls with rrn«diitv_r weight anion |i_i»rge nniiiiinitv. .ullNhoulil P 01 At this writing we are unable obtain the amount of damage sustained by* individual snllevevs, hut the full loss will not fall far sllOl t Of $200,01)0. Tiik Bankuiti Law.—The new bank, rujit law, passed by Congress, and signed, by the President, establishes a uniform j system of bankruptcy for tho whole country. The act, which lakes effect at once, sweeps ' away all State insolvent ami stay laws and J for imprisonment for debt, and, although it i luay not be perfect in all its pn Visions, will be hailed with gratification by the wh ile { country. It has been justly said that the absence of a uniform law of bankruptcy in this country lias been au opprobrium 1 to itM legislation. This law, while it ac complishes tho deliverance of the hopelessly impoverished debtor, also provides for t|»o security of the creditor. . v The St Paul Pioneer says: “Setae pco ,,i.. are verdant enough to ask, ‘Can Congress do soami aoV’ Why certainly they van.-- A railroad conductor once ncco^cd l.ida llonto* 0|», “.Mm.Iii't,, you -.am,„t., m ' 0 u,. iu the car.” “V,!it you we | , an,-» J.olu, 'fur ' nin il»iiig il.’ Thin Com- gressional logic.
