lie began the skirmish with a long account
of bis sufferings during the last twenty-four

concern.
“My dear sir,” lie began, as David paus
ed to take breath, “you're a very sick man
—there can be no doubt of that. I consid
er you the most dangerous ease on my list.”

David, with liiseyes very wide open.

David stared rather uneasily at the gray
pills and white powders that the doctor had
left upon his table.
“Jessie,” lie said to his wife, “ do—do you
think the doctor considers me dangerously
ill?”
“I’m afraid ho,” sighed Mrs. Ward. “Do

David fell hack among his pillows like a

that hot, unwholesome room, just as a stick
of celery bleaches in n dark cellar.”
