••Unknown,
in the Augusta Cemetery, and seeing one marked
mown.”—CAnniE Rkll Sixmin.
I stood beside a lit lie mound.
Marked by an humhie stone,
And read the soldier's epitaph
In the one word—“ Unknown!”
Not e’en a name to tsll of him
Who slept so sweetly there—
No name o'er which ieted one could bend
To drop affection's tear.
The only one who slept " Unknown”
Among the many brave,
••Bomebudy’s darling” though, I know.
Bleeps in tltnl soldier’* grute!
Perchance to some poor mother's heart
Ha waa the only joy—
» Perchance that mother waited long
To welfoino homo her boy !
Perhaps a gentle sister, too,
. Prayed for him night nud day,
And watched wit If'snx Ions heart to greet
Ths loted one from the fray ;
Or, it may lie somo maid whose low
To him was yet moro dear,
.. Is weeping now with grief for him
Who slcops so sweetly here!
Upon onoli little white *lah heie
Is traeed somo soldier s nntue. ^—
And proudly do we Into to tell
Their glorious deeds to fame!
Rut ah I’tis aad indeed to stand
Reside this humhie stone.
And read no name— and know that one
Is sleeping nil •• Unknown.
To know that there are losing heart a
Wbo’d glte thoir all to-day.
To eland btsldo this grave where sleeps
Their soldier boy in grey !
Hut 'tis enough to kuow that he
For our dear country died—
And stranger hands can twine tail Hotter*
Aboto 'his spot ir pride.
Ah ! heie are many soldier grates—
He dooa not sleep alone,
And though no name of him is traced
Upon this simple tint to—
There is a spotless scroll above
And on that snowy page
