A BEAR A.\D BULL COMBAT.
At iho first blush of morning (writos n

oxcitin" Hreiu*) I turnoil out, and a« othors
wm a i|itito as anxious as myself for the
event, breakfast was speedily dispatched,
and n general run made for the plalfomi.—
AU heinjr ready, the trap-doors were slowly
drawn up, and out rushed the combatants.
I must sav, on making their appearance, my
sympathies were with the hull, which seem
ed to he mueli the nobler animal fifths two,
lithe and wiry, vet withnl wonderfully mas
sive about the shoulders, he pave one the
idea of a splendid combination of strength
and sy linnet ry. . For a briet period he stood
glaring at t,h<» pickets and people, his head
erect, his eyes flashing 1 , his nostrils distend
ed, and his whole form fitted and rigid, as
il carved irom marble. The bear, on the
other hand, was the more conspicuous lor
ponderous weight and gigantic strength,
tendered more formidable by his terrible
teeth and claws. A sharp cut from the end
if a lasso roused the hull from his reverie,
ami, as though allrtbnting the insult to his
enemy, he lowered his horns, gave a deep
grumbling bellow, scraped with his forefeet,
sending the dust .v tl grass clean over his
hack, and then charges). Tho bear evinced
no signs of wavering, but, standing erect on
his hind legs, received the hull much in the
same way as he might have done if it had
been a trained and gigantic prize-fighter.—
The somewhat unwieldy llrttiii wtts nuick
and wary. No sooner was the bull within
reach, than both horns were clasped iu his
powerful grasp, and the hull’s head pressed
to the ground by main strength, ho bit sav
agely at the nose of his antagonist, and rak
ed strips of flesh from the bull’s shoulders
with his hind cIuwb, just ns a cat fights when
on its hack.
This position was maintained for some se
conds, the hull struggling fttriously to free
his head—the bear straining every mtisolo
to pin him to tho. ground—no apparent ad
vantage was gnitled on either side, and loud
dicers’ and bravos were indulged in by the
backers of ench. To my mind tho result of
the battle clearly depended on tho merest
accident. As it by mutual consent, Tjoth
animals gradually ceased to struggle, and
