TtiKH.—The Hutitavillo Advocate, I'cttiii'.
its mis-information Irom the reconstruction
Montgomery newspapers says ol the recent
Conservative meeting at tile Court House
in this city, that “there were no colored iter-
sons present.” This is not true. There
were several colored persons present, and
thoro would have boon a large number had
not those who desired, and intended tojjo
present been met by colored incmbersof ^
the secret league, who told them not to go
as it was a meeting of rebels who wantca to
put them bnck into slavery.
Of coupe, the object of the' Radicals in
endeavoring to show that no colored per
sons were at the meeting or desired to be
present, is to consolidate the entire negro
vote into the Radical party. At the same
time the leading Republicans or Radicals
are continually asseverating that they havo
gone into the Radical party in order to con
trol it. They profess to stand upon a plat
form which they do not endorse, and ac
knowledge beforo meetings of negroes wlint
they repudiate in private conversation. As
an Illustration oftlic tricks of such demago
gues, we instance the fact that the Augusta
Chronicle charges the Military Mayor of
Augusta, an ex-C’onfederatc officer, a Radi
cal and i.eaguer, with having lately made
the following remarks in the store oi' a mer
chant of that city:
“I am only pretending to he in their (the
negroes) inturost so that I can use them.—
1 have no idea of permitting them or any of
them to hold office. 1 want their votes, am
mameuvreing so as to seeuro them. 1 am
utterly opposed to their pretensions to social
ami political equality. I am compelled to
be Seemingly in their favor so as to be able
to control them.” This statement the Mili
tary Mayor has never denied.—[Montgom-

there resides a man named llrown, now a
ustice of the peace, ami a very sensible man,
»ut by common consent, the ugliest Individ"

and awry, with a gait like a kangaroo.—
One he day met a man on foot alone, who
was longer, gaunter, by all odds, than him
self. lleeould give the squire fitly ami heat
him. Without saying a word, llrown raised
his gnii ami deliberately leveled it at the
stranger.
“For (bid’s sake, don’t shoot,” shouted
the man in alarm.
“Stranger,” replied llrown, “I swore, ten
years ago, that if I ever met a man uglier
than I were, I’d shoot him,and you are the
first, one I’ve seen.”
The •tir.mger, after taking a careful survey
of his rival, replied :
“Well, captain, if l look any worse than
you do, shoot !”
