The minced lilt men, at the last meeting of the Board of Fire Masters, presented a series of resolutions, claiming that t heir first atxl second officers were cut tiled to seats ns members of tho Board, under the law crea ting the department. '1 lie first resolutions set forth the fact that the rules and regulations adopted by the Board are confirmed by the City Council and, therefore, are the law of tho depart ment. The second states that the first and second officers of the colored companies nre not on the roll of tho members ol the Bonrd and they a tv deprived of tho privilege ol voting. Tho third says the department grants rights to white officers auu none to the colored ; nnd they feel it a duty as citi zens and firemen to ask for the Hattie rights; that they have performed their duty faith fully for over ibrly years, and should enjoy all their rights, i’lie fourth resolution de clares that only the white officers of incor porated companies are allowed to wear iiadges. In the next they say that they feel that they are excluded front a position to which they are entitled. , As we stated above, immediately upon their entering into office, the new Board proceeded to place the colored firemen upon a better footing by allowing them to elect their own officers, giving ilium the name privilege as the head of the white organiza tion. The law creating the department says that the first and second officers of incor- tho com panies have never been incorporated, there fore their officers are not entitled to the rights they ask for. While we nro ever ready to give them due credit and recog nize their faithful services, wo must sav that the law is against them ; and until an net is passed by the Legislature of the State in corporating each company, the claim of the first and second officers to seats in the Board is not a just one.
