We have through much diflieiiltv and j*i i* vation, Hiieeeeded in carrying our paper through the dull season. And now cotton i* coming in, and bu*-ines8 reviving, \sv would gently remind those whom we hu\e indulged in matters «*1 suljseriptioii and ad vertirting, that the lime has come when they promised to rememher uh. To favor our friends we have hw*n compelled to borrow money at 21 percent., to l.e« p the paper going, and weeeitainly haven rigid to ex pect that those who are owing us, will come up at once, and see that we do not lose by accomodating them. We hope it will not be necessary to name each individual, to make this appeal personal. We mean you, whoever you arc, that is indebted to this ulllee. We must, have help, or w.i* must stop the publication of the paper. I'ii in in a n i «• u l i- <1 . Albany nml the South Georgia &. I lorhla Rallron To tiik Kiuron or an: \i:ws— Silt:—The town of Albany having dis played some energy in the achievement ol a eireuitors and tardy Rnilr<»:pl nniimiitii- lion with the Atlantic const, has since that time folded .her arms in idle apathy to dream of wild and impracticable schemes far beyond ber power to reali/.e. She dreamed, for evample that Mipporteil by a liew and imeomplclr enterprise in Alabama, thougb opposed by an old and established road iu her own Slate, she would be enable- id I<»stretch an iron arm to Ihiwsou on the west, and another to station No. u, oft he A. & 11. I*, lb, en the east. This was in deed a noble conception, but it w as nothing more, and conceptions are iiiifortunali 1\ mere creatures ol the brain. While our Kail road giants have been planning, men of more ordinary parts lia\ e been ‘building,’ and tbc abortest road that tests on “terra tinna” must out weigh iu material impor tance the still born creations ol the most pregnant fancy. I-el us reave to think and to talk ol w hat is chillier r d, and commence to no what may be practicable. Not only nre \ve in dan ger of neglecting all provision Ibr the future but we are seriously threatened with the loss ofwhat we enjoy at present, book to* wards the South, and see Tliomasville in spite of her w retched wagon roads, abstrac ting the cotton should he stored iu our ware houses. See the same Railroad which con fers power upon Thomnsvillc, now running daily westward to add its charms and pow erful attractions to Haiuhridgc, and make that town a rival where Albany has always reigned supreme. IfTliomasville has stmen froiy us one thousand bales of cotton I tain bridge will rob us of not less than eight times that amount. This last place is sixty-six miles nearer to Savannah than we are, the river competition will force dawn freights upon cotton which Savannah must command nt any sacrifice, and the w agon roads on ti e west and north-west, ami in rth of Huinhridgc are so line as to invite w agons from a great distance. The ferry tax upon cotton crossing the river,“will be paid by the Railroad Company, until the completion ofu bridge by themselves and that town. I speak what 1 know wheal state teat tinder the influence of these com bined nttinctions, they are many planters who intend hauling cotton forty miles to Iktinbridgc, rather than twenty miles to any other branch of the South-Western Rail way* This however, is only the “commence- ment” of our ruin. l!tho_ location of the South Georgia Florida Road is not con trolled by this town, we will see our eom mcrcial ruin “completed" in the eons:rue-, t ion of that ltoad. This is the subject ol my communication to your paper, and what proceeds has been merely introductory. The S. (». A. R. R. Co, enjoy the most liberal charter e ver granted by the State, mid all the rights therefore conferred on nl, other Roads may he considered united here They proposed in the first place to build from Montjcello, Fla., via Thoniasvil'e to Albany, but they are authorized to build a part orthe whole may locate upon any one of various and widely difTerei t lines* ami may even construe' lilio charter, so as to ebaiigo their terminal point from Albany elsewhere. Nour.however, gwnt the benefit which might accrue to Albany from the const me* tion oTTHo road tJ ia “originally proposed there can be no doubt that certain changes, i ealle *. in.-’ r.'.i.nenis upon the stock, ami h) the almost unanimous vote of tyfyu and «'unity have pledged thenr’-lv' x to subjnitto heavy taxation.” They already qommand yotu confidence if they do not ltercuftoi gain vottr suppo: t. They may without im propriety, assume tow aid you itu nits of su periority, ami say "gentlemen, if you ,do not lend us your assistance in carrying in to execution the original design of that bai ter, which was the offspring of our mu tual interest, we will break olV the alliance between us and reek in some oilier quarter the support that isdei.icd us here. Wi Wil t. Ill ll.l* VIA NtiW'tON to Ul TIIUKUT.’’ Now what would be the result of such a Road? 'Ill it ruin of Albany interests at which l have already hinted ami which, if not apparent at the first glance, must be come so upon the slightest reflection.— Newton w ithin if2 miles of Albany by com mon roads would have the advantage over us of being (PJ miles and 12 hours nearer to the city ofSavanuah. Her cotton would In* shipped over an unbroken line of rails by which tin* freights would be the “very lowest possible,” for the A. Si (J. R. R. hav ing uiieonlested monopoly along nine tenth of its route would carry from its terminal points as cheaply ns from midway stations. That Road can and will iu connection with the South Georgia A Florida, convey cot ton as cheaply from Newton as the she now dues from t >uitman. Not only would New ton present iiTcsistnhlcuttructiuns locotton but she would undersell Albany, whether dry goodsI'.uftn New York via Savannah, or western supplies via .Montgomery and C *ut lilici (. It seems t«> be very evident that Newton and stations between Newton ami ( lit Illicit, would absorb four filths of die cotton nml mercantile business of Albany, ami that Albany taken in Hank and rear w ould be compelled to surrender to iimi-c v igorons hands the monopoly which she has so long wielded over ail extensive and pro duct ive region. 'll may he said however, that Newton has m» capital. It is impossible that a place cc. copying such a position, and with such Rail- load facilities should he without capital a v'ingle month. The capital of Albany ilscll w ould join in tin* general movement toward the new centre. 'Common sense teaches that bill a few years would elapse, before him ber in Newton would cost more than bouses w ould he wonh ik Albany. It. matters not what name you givb this rival ofour futiuc ■gr» atnvss, imr is it)necessary to locate it w ith precision—it may lie New ton or it in.iv sor lie Newtoli, it may be A miles aiiovkoi .! miles iii.t.ovv, but whatever its name ami w clever it arises it w ill ascend high enough to east its shadow upon Albany, Uijt someone may say that these specu lations arc all idle lorilic threatened Rail road is not built and “will not be built."— ( l«t us not dcccii c otir.M-h is on that point. ! Never was there a Railroad on! crprize upoa j width a greater number ol diverse interests centered than upon this from Tliomasville to Cuthhert. The people of Thomas count v have already subscribed so largely as to be ready for the commencement of actual work I he people ol .Mitchell count y are fully aroused, and Raker county is now realizing the immense importance nl a connection The people who have been hauling cotton to \ our doors have been clamoring fora Railroad lor the last fifteen years. Until- bert is even now iuvitinga road from Rain* bridge, lull prefers it from Tliomasville.— Finally the .Montgomery A Fit law la R. R. connect ion has abandoned your enterprise to station 9 of the AG R. R. in despairaud will now do for Tliomasville, all that they promised you. Rebind this strong array ot mutual interests the Atlantic it Gulf R R Co. holds itself in reserve ami stands reads to afford assistance at the first moment that tin* enterprize may falter. It would be fid- ly for us io doubi the successor the Road if once undertaken in the dilution of Cutli- w alii *\[uPfttf V iinl I ! 5 '* lhHi t!•. ’Mill* sit, yti built, and. insert lliat itr. dftil^qri ji:ay be averted, f hey cfiii buly be avertvit by destroying the Inonster in its criv.Rc'. The South Georgia Sc Flori da Company should be induced to return to their original designs, nml the road should he a “Tliomasville and Albany* 1 road. That original design would never have been aban doned, but for the coldness and indifference ol our people, and their obstinate adherauce to move ambitious but less practicable plaits of improvement. We must have Railroad meetings, ami subscribe sufficient stock to give us a strong voice in the loca'ion of the Road. Its terminus must be at Albany and if its route is not direct, it must at least cross tbu river not far to the south. At any liazzard we must prevent the connection with Ciithbeit, for even If the location should pass via Newton to this place, we have little to fear so long as we are secure against the movement from the former place. With a successful construction from Thomnsvillc to tills place, and a road from this to Dawson, we will acquire all that we may hope to gain and it would not be dilli- ill to show Albany vvotfld be tlicj ipient of the many benefits which the far tlier development of the country would iav ish upon every branch of the people’s Indus, try. Having taken considerable pains to ascer tain the intention of the South 4*teorgi:i A Florida Railroad Company, ami their pros- peels ofsueeess, I lay the above before the people of Dougherty for their consideration, Imping that our men of meals may go to work at once. I.et some of Jail* influential citizens go out with lists for subscribers to stock, to sign, with the amount of stock af fixed. Suppose three lists were put in mo tion, one lor one thousand dollars to each subscriber, another for five hundred dollars, and another for two hundred and fifty dol lars. After gefting a respectable number of subscribers, bold a meeting and take such action ns may bo necessary to have subseiibcrs hero represented in the Compa ny. .Mr. F.ditor, try to wake up our people. Suppose that this dangerous Road were now built ami in actual operation. Could the situation then admit of remedy? Could we build any Road which would checkmate the other and restore to Albany her former aseetidaey on the west, side of Flint River? Some one might suppose that the building of a Road direct to station 0 or other point on the Gulf Road would effect the object. It certainly would not do so for though it would shorten the distance to Savannah, it would not diminish the freights. The A. & (J. ltoad from No 1) to Savannah would re. fuse to compete with the A. AG It. R. from No ID to Savannah. They would natural ly prefer to carry the cotton over their w hole length, and would ehargo such heavy rates ou your cotton as to coutiuuc it iu the interest of the planter to seek the Cuthhert and Tliomasville stations in preference to your own. All this is pi tin and will admit of no reply. You could not build direct to Savannah, and nothing else would answer the necessities of Albany. There is one course however which i: sm li an emergency would at least amelior ate the condition of Albany, and that would he tlte const ruction of a Road from herself to Newton. If indeed Hitch a road could bo built before New ton was well advanced, it is very possible that Albany might by hu- perior capital retain her present superiori ty, but she would barely sustain, not add “Herse House,” with Cnpl. Devse as pro prietor, his sou retiring. At Kufaula, the Howard House, has changed hands, and John Howard, ho well known, takes posses sion again. The Faria House of this city is now occupied by Mrs Hradeiibaek, Mr. Paris retiring. Stationnty, and still keeping up their rep utation, as the best houses in the country is the celebrated Frown's.
