Tho restilt was, as wo have said, greatly increased prod ac tion elsewhere, observable mainly in tho enlarged exports from India, which speedi ly put an end to the cotton famine.in Eng land and stimulated her forty millions of spindlea to greater activity than ever. Man ufactured goods soon clogged the patba of commerce and tho tremendous ..power of machinery in England and tho continent has kept them choked ever since. Earopo, for two yearn past, has had too much cotton, far mort.thau she could use, and now wa have tho collapse, which means simply this: that until old garments arc worn ont, no now clothes arc needed. In addition to tho causes which wa hare named, in order to account for the rcoent decline, there are others as potent, and not the least among them is thi conservative feeling which ig daily spreading abroad io this country with regard to expenditure^.
