'HTii.o Eagle. Thursday. ... Feb. 28, 1889. John Alderman has the rheumatizv Mrs. Sallie Donaldson vis¬ ited in town last week. Mr. Dan Alderman has been very ill with the mumps. A barber shop would be a paying institution in this burg. i J. A. Branneu is attending County Court in Emanuel this week. The mumps are raging over the county* Have the'vin¬ egar ready. The Excelsior High School is Hu a boom; sols the States¬ boro Academy. Syrup is cheap now. Twen¬ ty-five cents by the barrel is the ruling price. Zoar news should have ap ^eaee4’4fltw4*w-eek i but lack ot fepacq prcvcntvtl. Mr. Sol. Akins don’t plant pig crops, but he makes a lies heap to the acre. Therein the success of farming. Have you noticed the iu> ^movement in The Eagle? Don’t you think it is worth S cents a week, or $1 a year? Malcolm Scarboro is paint¬ ing the town—not other red, how fever, but atiy color you flesire. Walter Johnson's chimney Is leaning over towards Billy ilagin’s sleeping ro m. Look but, Billy. Mr. Mack Mercer hauls lumber for everybody, and then hauls guano for the bal¬ ance of the people. Mr. Lamb Lanier, of this bounty, Friday was seriously hurt last by a rail falling mud. striking him ou the left %ide. i Mr. Virgil Johnson will %aovo to the capital i n a week or two. lie and Dan Davis Ihop. will open tip a large work The creeks and rivers are on another boom. Ogeechee ■* was impassible again last week. . Wouldn’t a railroad oe the idea? Mr. John D. Ford was in lo see the King of Birds this Mr. Ford landmarks of Bulloch. He came over from Ireland in the », r Or riding On the streets is dangerous. The school at Macedonia Aeu’eniy Monday commenced last with a full attend mice. The music department, Miss Nora Bradley teacher, has about ten scholars. 7 Mr. James Bland, S. H. Kennedy and Allen Hagins,of jEnal, Ha.$ are very anxious to Secure the services of a good flood teacher in their neighboi for 3 or 6 tnonths. : The grading on the Dover find Statesboro Railroad has been completed for over two piiles* If the people do their share on next Monday the road Will soon be completed. The projectors of the, new foad , pushing , . ,, the work. , are and now have 75 men cm ployed grading and laying ties. r The 1 pile driver will ipnve . this ,. week , and j . begin Operations* You will see on the fii'M of The Eagle a di the rectory giving the names c; f officers who engineer the eouiity affairs and dispense justice. We will soon publish a church directory. Charles Preetorius is a man who in years gone by hud an eye to the future, and by his right calculations now owns valuable lands in several counties. He is a German by birth, but a Bulloch Cracker by adoption. Mr. John Turner, living near Metter, was cutting down a large, pine tree last week, and as it fell a limb broke tiom the tree and struck him on the side of the head, inflicting a bad wound. He is recovering from it. Mr. E. B. Ross, who is teaching school at Gordon Academy, near Metter, was hurt or, the head and artn last week. A mule was tied to a cart wheel and jerked the cart over, the wheel striking Mr. Ross a severe blow. He is from Missouri and ought to understand a mule. Lots are being bought every day in this embryo city. Let people who own the land lay out streets and sell their lots. That is the only way to build a town. The fellow who hold s op tofrys.laraL andJEQo’t sell is a drawback, and altef it is too late he finds out he ought to have sold that land long ago. There is a young man in town who has the patent right for court¬ ing, as well as other things, for he never stands back for rain, snow or blow, but only looks after his best girl. He is also a member of our Social Club. We regret losing the brightest young man in Statesboro, but can only say that Excelsior has gained him. It is surprising to see young men gbing out into the country on a lark when there are hosts of Bulloch belles in town. Williams, * Jo!^. Wr^-’ius. formerly riRoK of Bulloch, of Mi. F. who S. has been in the employ of, the Cen Railroad has gone to Mexico to work on the Mexican Central Road, a road 1,300 miles long which runs from La"edo, Tex., to Mexico City. LETTER FROM IRIC, To the Editor of the Eayle: Df,ar Sir—O n Monday morning, 11th inst., this scribe, together with H.F.Warnock and J.L Hutchin- 8,,D ’ boarded the train at Brewer on ^ to Brunswick, where the State Agricultural Society was to c to ™° Waycross DCXt is y ‘ J 98 rom miles. , Savan The “ ah country is mostly low and level, but the road is smooth and transit quick. Jesup is the first stop 4u miles from Savannah, but, the town is not showy and the location seems to be a little low; in fact, Jesup seems to be nearly grown. Further which is no t ed f (>r its wide swamps, in many places two or three miles deep. The stream is navigable for steamboats of considerable burden at this cross¬ ing. Blackshear, in Pierce county, is a town of considerable size and taste, and is the Cotton'market not only o£ 1Jierce > but of w »y“ e - Ware and A PP lin ^ als0 This wa8 thehome of Hon. A. J. Strickland, . who died a few weeks ago and who once a resident ot Bulloch county. All along the line of this road the lumber and turpentine business seems to be «n«the wane, and along this road you see no good farms. Waycross is reached at dark. It certainly has the right Daine » there being from about forty to fifty trains passing that place every 2l hours. A system of drain „cre is under discussion which wifi be df benefit to the town. The pop „iation is about 4,000 inhabitant*, Off for Brunswick at 10 o’clock a. m. on quite a rough and jolty road, that of the Albany and Brunswick W« see a poor country now; no f arui9 of note, and the timber being all jcut from the land makes it look barren and desolate. However, on aearin £ l!w cabh ^ e palmetto trees form a picturesque , api)eariinc# o’clock, . Two and we are at Bruns- r too t -v tor the forenoon se: . . Tho a of welcome, the speech of acceptance ami the semi-annual address were all missed hy our delegation from the Ph neer Club, and many others, on account of there being but one train a da\ from Waycross. _ The cm ration met in the Masonic Hall, which has a seating capacity of 800 or 400 people. The afternoon sessi >n was mostly taken up by a long and tedious address (on paper) on the immigration and advertisement scheme and plan as adopted last year. Ail the addresses seemed to me to be foreign to the subject to he discussed, that ot practical farming. The short letter of Mr. John A. Martin, of Liberty county, to be found iu the transactions of the tall meeting of the convention at Newman, is, in my opinion, worth more to the average fanner than any other address of the meeting—that of making and keeping sweet po¬ tatoes. The convention was in session Oedartown. two days, anil adjourned to meet in Folk county, on the second Tuesday in August next. Dr. Carey is said la be the ladies' man of our convention, and 1 shall contend that Dr. Cone, C. II. War nock and James Thorne are the ladies’ men of our local club. 'I he members of the convention were tendered an excursion to St. -by the Mayor, but we were unable to attend. Brunswick contains a population of 10,000 or 12,000 inhabitants, and is entitled to be callt-d “city.’’ It is well laid off, and the location for a city seems admirable. Considerable building is going on and real estate is advertised for sale all over the city. Brunswick is the largest lumber market in Georgia', and by and by may be a great city. We visited "Lover’s Oak,” the branches Qbwjiicli tiX tend 40 yai ds .across anti whose trunk is 18 feet in diameter at the ground Everyone visiting Brunswick should go and see this oak. C. S. M.
