Items of Interest Gathered
Here and There,
The New York Bargain
Store is the champion of low
prices.
Rev. W McWilliams war
in town on Tuesday.
Cotton for the first time in
our history is not money.
The merchants are doing a
lively trade in Krismas tnx.
Mr. A, L. Branncii, of
Jesup, is on a yisit to friend*
in Bulloch.
Go to the concert on Fri¬
day night. It will be pleasant
and entertaining.
Mr. Budd Matthews wid
move on Dr. Holland's farm
near town,
IVe wish you a pleasant
Christmas and long life, and
may your shadow never grow
lesa.
First of morning, last at
night, lowest in prices, best in
goods. New York Bargain
Store.
Bob Lester killed a hop:
last week that weighed 310
‘pounds, and Carter Smith
killed 8 that averaged 230.
Mr. Cheat Smith,brother ef
mir townsmen, W. T. and J.
A. Smith, died at his homo in
Washington county on Sun
da y
.
Mr. S. A, Alford, of Green,
whs tnanicni to Mi*a Mary
Henry a fcw days ago. Mr.
Alford is one of our
citizens from the old
PWjfresaive
we bespeak for
trade.
John R. Slater, formerly of
Bulloch, has boon elected So¬
licitor General of the south¬
ern circuit. Be are glad to
hear of John’s success In his
new home.
Ciuad Lop, roeenily gradu¬
ated at a commercial college
in Atlanta, is now clerking
lor Lanier Brothers. Claud
is an industrious, sober yonng
man, and will do well.
An allianecman writing in
the last issue of the Baxley
Banner says: “The alliance
is the cause of the low price
of cotton.” Ain’t it overpro¬
duction, or a corner on the
money market?
Pay Up.—'T hose indebted
to me must make payment be¬
fore January 1, or I will hav
to place their accounts and
notes in the hands of an at¬
torney lor collection. Fai*
warning. W. II. Blitcii.
No dull days, no sleeping on
our counters—all day long,
steady hustling. New York
Bargain Store.
Rev. J. H. Dew tilled the
pulpit at the Baptist church
here last Sunday. Mr. Dew
was accompanied by his wife
and both are pleased with
Bulloch. Their present home
is Jyaohoe,
There ie more money now,
somewhere, than ever betoro,
but where is it? It is cornered
by the money fellows, and
suppose you increase th« cir¬
culation, wont they still gob¬
ble it all up? Now,
proper thing to do, i« to
vent a corner on the awmay
the country by proper law*.
The Situation.
It id not very pleasant to
contemplate that Jay Gould
1ms §100.000,000, anti yet
there are poor children in Bul¬
loch who will go barefoot this
winter for the want of money
to buy shoes. There is some¬
thing rotten up die branch.
We all agree on this. Now
let the yard stick be laid aside,
uul secrecy removed from
politics, and eight millions
of the friends of Keforrn will
march to the ballot-box and
give monopoly a death blow.
The fight of the farmers and
iauorers is a righteous one,
and it conducted strictly on
the plan of “equal rights to
all, and special privileges to.
none,” would command the
support, of every fiiernl to
good government. But it
.vid not do to ostracise a
neighboron a “side issue.”
riie*great danger tophi.^gov¬
ernment is the money power—
wealth concentrated in tin
hands of the few. When the
wicked rule, the people mourn
and the question is, shall the
people rule or the money
power? The taxes wrung
from our people is alarming—
$135,000,000 this year for
pensions, and the south pays
nearly half of it and does not
get any back. An unjust
tariff robs us of §100,000,000
a year which goes into the
pockets of the rich, and mil¬
lions go to pay the public'
debt. Money only commands
3 1-2 percent on government
; bonds, and yet the!poor bor¬
rower who toils in the field
and the workshop, pays from
8jJto 40 cent if he gets it a
aii. A few thousand roll in
luxury, while many millions
toil through necessity, In
some sections a few syndicates
Bind corporations are buying
dhali wc do? Let ua work in
unity, Let us when it comes
politic# meet in public and
every friend of reform
discuss public questions
and fairly. Lot u?
have no cut and dried plat¬
forms made by a few men.
Let us quit being suspicious
our neighbor; let us meet
a common level, requiring
no password, and with :»
united people under the ban¬
ner of reform victory would
soon come, and iMutccraej
would losen its venomous
grasp upon this people. My
idea of reform is tbi -: Keep
the public land for actual set¬
tlers, prevent land monopoly.
Levy an income tax on the
b'ouled bondholder and stock
jobber. Prevent corners on
the market. Stop the pen¬
sion grab. Lower the tariff,
admit raw material free and
put the tariff on the aristo
orat’s diamonds and take it oil
the poor man’s plows. Re¬
peal all class legislation. IIav<
free silver and gold. Repeal
the national bank laws and
substitute legal tender treas¬
ury notes, based on the
good faith of the government
in sufficient quantity to do
the business of the country.
( ['his a nice question, as to
how much, but to keep it as
good as gold anil -silver, so
as to have a steady money,
that values will be protected.)
Open up trade with other
countries, and finally let the
people run the government,
and not the governmen, the
people. Can’t we all agree? Lot
us try it, and let us beware
of any third party, if
can be had thiongh democ¬
racy, and I think it can.
Remember your debts, as
they win not forget you,

iligdi .School.
Excelsior has been a village
noted for its high schools, re¬
ligious ami moral training, but
for the past two or three years
she has not kept abreast with
that good name in former
years. Looking at the old
saying, “What’s everybody’s
business is nobody’s busi¬
ness”—the cause has suffered.
But now all, with one accord,
say, let her rise and send forth
the news, she is not dead, but
imtb. The spirit that ha?
took hold of our people around
Excelsior, portrays a bright
future for our little town, and
with this spirit to lead, and
the coming railroad just neat
