TiivnsDAY, aih. it. isn.n.
TO THE PUBLIC.
Is response to the “St.nr's” voluminous
replv to the Times' statement last week,
we simply desire to reiterate that the le¬
gal patronage we bought from Mr. Mil¬
ler was all that had Iceii guaranteed to
the Times during the incumbency ol the
present Sheriff and Ordinary, our interest
iu both subscription and advertising to
begin with April 1st.
After the trade was made upon these
terms. Mr. Miller suggests! that lie had
half completed the legal advertising for
April, and weoughtto divide it, to wliieh
\vc gave our asrwait.
We have an inventory
Oge which Mr. Miller proposed to sell 11S,
in' which the legal advertising is listed at
$(500 a year. Wo have that document,
W |,i, li will 1 ............. to any one desir
ing to see it.
We now propose to give the public a
little further information in regard to
Miller's dealings with the present propri¬
etors of this paper: When we took pos¬
session of the Times it was Urn under¬
standing that the paper would be sap
plied to all subscribers who had paid Mil¬
ler in advance, mid that we would gel
com pensntion from the collection of
our Miller for the
arrearages which were due
to April 1st. Miller was to put in
paper especially during I week,
his services, emu
to bring in as much of this as could be
collected, having the advantage of being
acqiiftiuW-d with the people, and was also
to collect the Ajiril advertising for the
same reason.
Undid the collecting, but refused to
pay to us any part of the aiTearages on
subscriptions collected by himself, and
kept back in the settlement f I <’•> of onr
part of the April advertising, telling us
that we could have the full benefit of ccr
tain accounts which he laid placed in I he
hands of the Sheriff and Ordinary. In
response to our protect in regard to his
withholding the amount collected on
subscript ions, while due mom ih.iu #!<><>
to yfip present proprietors on snbsu lp.
Lions prepaid to himself, lie said t hat lie
would henceforth either semi all parties
1 o the office to make settlement, or
would bring into the office as soon a.
collected everything that might be paid
to himself.
But since that time he has busied him¬
self in collecting arrearages, all of which
he has pocketed, and he was overtaken
and defeated in an effort to collect on one
of the advertising accounts from which
we were to recover a portion of this #1.65
hereinbefore referred to.
We make this statement for the
pose of showing to the public more of the
business methods of the man that we
have hud to deal with. His ’insinuation
that the Times compromises principle for
pecuniary considerations, is worthy of
the source from which it emitiales. li
would be an entire waste of time and
space to notice it. The people of Bul¬
loch county are judges of what they ire
getting, and with this the Times is satis¬
fied. It only kicks upon being deprived
of property for which it has paid its
money, and an attempt to have the
wrong so perpetrated laid upon the
shoulders of democracy. But if Millar is
dissatisfied with the bargain he made in
disposing of the Times and its patronage,
ho ean have it back by returning to us
the amount paid him. We will not ask
anybody to vote on thequestiou, but for
the sake of preserving harmony in the
ranks of the democracy of this county,
and saving ourselves from nny further
loss in contest with mi irresponsible man,
we will quietly and peacefully yield the
field.
Mil Cleveland is on the platform; but
lie is not on the rear end of it.
The Constitution is still worshipping
at the shrine of David B. Hill: that is,
when it knows whereto find him.
Work is being vigorously prosecuted
on the F. ('. & P. line between .Savannah
and Jacksonville, otherwise called the
Florida Northern, a half-mile of track be¬
ing laid at the Savannah end Friday last.
Congressman Cabaniss favors a gradu¬
ated income tux, as one of the methods
of relieving the financial situation. He is
right, Ia*t us try the plan of taxing- the
rich on their surplus, rather than the
poor on their necessities.
The SftvaTinah New* Observes that
“the few southern newspapers that pro¬
fess disappointment iu the President's
message were papers whose editors had
axes to grind, and for whom tlie Presi¬
dent declined to turn the stone."
• The Atlanta Journal extends a cordial
invitation to refugees from yellow fever
at Pensacola, assuring them that Atlan¬
ta would be glad to have them. Not a
few have accepted, and at this time “Tlie
Gate City” has a considerable Florida
contingent.
It has been estimated that the present
cotton crop will bring into this country
two hundred million dollars. It is said
that the farmers have contracted fewer
debts ou this crop than upon any since
tlie war. and, having given more atten¬
tion to crops for home consumption, w ill
come out in totter condition than for
many previous seasons.
<avu iho the Augusta < ,u nroiiiele: li>m ; i 1 uxt,. Mr.
it. Clevelands , r message is . squarely , in accord ,
with the Democratic platform as far as it
goes. The only complaint is that it does
not go far enough. There is nothing in
the message that is not in the platform;
but there is a good deal in the platform
that is not in the message."
That is all right. The Times is very
glad that the President left a little thiuk
ing for congress to do.

The Times would like to know ho w its

President does not stand on the demo¬

upon which Mr. Cleveland whs elected
contains this language as the dcmorrrftic
sentiment:
“We denounce the republican legisla¬

as a cowardly makeshift, fraught with
possibilities of danger in Lite future which
should make all of its supporters, as well
