There are quite a large number of our
subscribers who are slightly in arrears
with their county paper, and to them we
would gently say that we are very much
in need of a big nest full of eagles. A
dollar is a very small matter to the
average man, but when nearly one thou¬
sand men each owe a dollar to one busi¬
ness, it amounts to a great deal. If you
have already paid up this notice does
not apply to you, but if your dollar has
Dot found its way to the Times’ ex¬
chequer, please start it in that direction
as soon as you can.
Lewis Redwine has been par¬
doned.
A blizzard from the northwest
is headed this way, and due in
Atlanta before Sunday.
If Tom Watson is out of poli¬
tics, we think it can truthfully be
said for God’s sake let him stay
out.
Mrs. Longstreet has resigned
her position as assistant librarian
and will not be iu the race for
state librarian.
We have had the governor's
message on our table for several
days, and like his ideas concern¬
ing the convict question.
We were informed by Judge
Gamble last night that court
would not adjourn until next week
if it’ were necessary to clear the
docket.
______
Mr. Nebbit writes us that owing
to the shortness of funds he will
not be able to furnish his usual
talks to farmers any more until
January.
Charles Dana, editor of the
New York Sun, is dead. While
journalism loses a leading writer
of the oh the South also
oseOne ol her bitterest enemies.
While the politicians are quiet¬
ly making up their slates, they
had as well put down some one
from South Georgia for governor.
This section of the state is going
to look after her own interests iu
the next election.
Gov. Atkinson has done a great
deal for Georgia’s young ladies
and the convicts. Let him now
turn his attention to her common
schools and if he improves that
system the working people ought
surely to love him.
The Savannah Press gives a pic¬
ture of the government building
iu Savannah, erected through the
efforts of Col. R. E. Lester. It is
s lid to be the finest structure in
the South, and we should be proud
of it as well as our beloved con¬
gressman who obtained it.
We are proud to know that the
captain of the University foot ball
feam is a wire grass boy. The
Times has known Captain Kent
since childhood, aud whatever
may be said of foot ball, W. B.
Kent will do nothing to disgrace
himself nor the team which he
commands
Hon. Robert L. Berner is al¬
most in the race for governor.
The Times would be glad to see
him in the White House for we
believe he is fuliy competent and
that he would do his state proud
in the executive chair, but we
thiuk it time for South Georgia
to have the honor of furnishing
the governor. Hence we are going
to have a candidate of our ow» if
necessary—maybe.
It is reported that the legisla¬
torial committees have whittled
on the proposed convict bill, pre¬
pared by Hon. Hewlet Hall until
it can’t be split any more, and
trampled upon it ’till all the es¬
sence is gone. If that be true the
next general assembly ought to
discharge these committees, take
*be matter iu hand and institute

reasons. From the charge we learn
that such news has largely been
the cause of so much whiskey sell

. «a
outlllV9 aU d cut-throats from
joining counties and the country
generally because they thought
they do those things with impu¬
nity. Tim Plwf? Sbwtf further
that the juries rather thau the
officers have been to blame. At
any rate if the business is not
broken up at this court the respon¬
sibility will rest upou their •boul¬
ders. So far both the grand and
petit juries jseem to be doing their
duty. A large number of indict¬
ments have been found, and when
the facts warrant it the lower jury
have verdicts of guilty. Let tin
good work go on until this curse
and stigma has been removed from
our county, or else show to the
world that we have been slandered.
We wish to call special attention
to our clothing. We looked w r ell

goods of finest quality at reasona¬
ble prices. J. G. Blitch.
Don’t Trade For It.
On or about October 7, 1897, 1
gave J. S. Tart a note, and I hereby
warn all parties from trading for
it. Failure of consideration.
J. E. Hagin.
I didn’t have to go to New York
