Georgia, as *eoond-«laes mall matter.
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 5, 1897.
W* rejoice at the coming of cold
weather for the good it will do the
yellow fever district.
The Masonic Grand Lodge met
in Atlanta last Tuesday. Dr.
.
Miller, of Mill Ray, attended if
from this county.
We are glad that Judge Gamble
continued court into the present
week, and we venture the asser¬
tion that more business has been
done this term than at any pre¬
vious court for many years past.
Every one could not have his way
but the matter is settled, and
those concerned can return home
with the satisfaction at least
of knowing that all is over now.
And let not those who were at
variance foster unkind feelings
for each other, but wipe out the
past and lie friends In the future.
The trial, conviction and sen¬
tencing of several men in the Su
’ perior court last week will have
someeffect upon the other whiskey
sellers in this county. We use
the word other because we have
-V-t lieen and believe there
told are
several places in the county where
whiskey can be had, and we have
also heard it said that intoxicat¬
ing beverages can now be had in
Statesboro. We are neither a
crank or fanatic on the whiskey
question, but we are strongly in
favor of" punishing every man
that violates the law. As long as
it is against the law t^sell intox¬
icants, the people should see that
all men respect the law If it is
a bad law, repeal it. If the peo¬
ple want barrooms, have the law
modified so that their wishes may
be realised. But as long as we
have taws, the courts and the peo¬
ple should nt»ke all men, rich or
by them.

intimately. Indeed, we learn
from him that Mr. Lester is quite
himself agaiu and will no doubt
feel the effects of his apjxiplect ic
stroke lio longer. All of this is
very grat ifying to the many friends
of Mr. Lester, and they will rejoice
to know that he will soon be able
to resume his duties iu congress.
When Mr. Lester was taken ill
it was noised abroad by his non
supporters that hig career was
practically over, and they began
to cast about for another congress¬
man, but Mr. Lester recovered
sufficiently to enable him to return
to congress and the matter was
dropped, and we suggest that it
remain in statue quo for some
time yet.
Jt is not known that Mr. Lester
wishes to go back to congress
again, but it lias been suggested
that it would be a very graceful
thing to tender him the nomina¬
tion. He has served the district
faithfully and well, and granting
that bis health will not be good,
he can do more for us iu congress
tliiu any man in the district. We
K6pe, therefore, that the sugges¬
tion will be put into execution.
