Strange End to n Fight
Two aknlla of Btags, with horn* no
firmly locked together that they could
not . . be separated, . , . fonnd _ day ,
were one
in the mountains of Colorado. It in
quite . plain , , that they once , belonged , , to _ a
oonple of stags who had a terrible fight
in the solitude of the mountains. After
the combat had been kept up for some
time, their bore, became eo entiled
and locked together that they could not
get ® them apart It is very probable, 1 :
*
that when this , happ«*ned, - they . stopped .
thinking of fighting, and tried their
bent to get away from each other. But
thin wan of no use. Their home were
*° interlocked that they could
not twist nor pull them apart, iio they
stumbled about, for the rest of their
liven, with their headn clowe together
We cannot know how long they lived
thin way. They may have l>ecn able to
eat a little grass, if both of them agreed
to put down their heads at the same
time. But at last they died. And how
curiously things turned out 1 Each of
them hoped to kill the other, and yet
the result of the quarrel was to bind
them together as long as they lived, and
even death did not part them. And, if
they thought that no one would over
know of the fight, how greatly they
were mistaken I The record of the com¬
bat—their two skulls fastened together
—has remained for many a long year,
and will remain for many a year to
oome. It was truly a strange end to a
fight.
Bhakspearo makes Polonius say :
“ Beware
Of entrance to a quarrel; but, being in, *
Hear t, that the opposer may beware of thee.'
Theae Btaga did that with a vengeance ;
didn’t they ?
It very often happens in other fights
or disputes that the fighters cannot stop
and separate just when they wish to.
Something is apt to get hopelessly in¬
terlocked and tangled, such as good¬
will, or self-respect, or fairness, or
honor. Still, one mnstn’t be too peace¬
able, as the Quaker said when he took
up a pitchfork as he saw the mad bull
coming.—Af. Nicholas.

are. What troubles us is that on one
side we are completely loaded down with
readiness, while on the other side op¬
portunity is painfully scarce.
American sociability is strikingly il¬
lustrated wlieu two next door neighbors
come out of their gates at the same mo¬
ment without bidding the top o’ the
morning to one another, or as much as
saying boo. both going down the street
unconcernedly, one behind the other,
each seeming 'oblivious of the other’s
proximity.
