FEBRUARY 16, 18*2.
Local Affairs.
R<;d the Town Ordinance*.
The next thing we need worst, of
nil, is a County Jail. Bet our next
grand jury take some action in tliiw
matter.
Prof. Hanna is building up a good
School here. Send on your children,
there is room for several more yet.
Come up an«l take out your licenses
for the present year.
Oh 1 by the way, we had forgot to
congratulate our worthy Ordinary,
Mr. A. J. Strickland. It is o girl
and weighs about 9 pounds
Mr*. J. L. Milton is visiti ig friend*
and relatives in town.
Why don't you attend Prof. Hanna's
night School?
Col. John C. McDonn'd of way
cross sjient Sunday with us
Our city forefather* ha\e put their
beads together and decid* d to levy a
tax—-rake up your spare change for
they are going to have it.
Head the new charter of lJlaekshear
in the Georgia act* of 80—81. It is a
well witten and wisely prepard article.
The Town council are contempla¬
ting u series of improvement. They
should be encouraged in all such
tinder taking*.
Some lady of I hi* p!#ce should take
the agency tor the popular and us *lul
book “Practical Housekeeping,’’ issued
by the Buckeye Publishing Co., Min
neapolis. Minn. It sells rapidly on its
merit *. Every lady w ho ex ami es it,
wants it. Andress publishers for terms.
,-ee the advertisement of Allcocks
* Porta* Plash r" in this issue.
The town Ordinances are no* in
force and will be enforced; so read the
Ordinancs in this issue and you will
not be at a loss to know how to con¬
duct j ourself when in town.
Prof. Hannas Night School will
•hereafter Convene at the Academy, at
the usual hour.
We recieved a nice little “bouquet”
of Strawberries yesterday sent to this
office by a young lady of this town,
and were it not, that we were a friend
we would give her name; but, however,
they came from Dr. H. J. Smiths
ami are the first that we have heard
of this year, and they were tine too.
We have heard in the past few
days that a Mrs. Carter in this County
owns a Cow that has five well devel
0 |>ed legs ami three distinct ears, the
fifth leg comes out at the top of the
shoulder blade and hung dowu by her
side ami reaches to within an inch or
too of the ground and is well hoofed;
and the third ear is right hy the fifth
leg at the top of the Shoulder blade.
We are truly glad to know that
the Baptist in this place, were so
fortunate as to procure the services of
Rev. G. B. Jenkins as paster of
that church for the present year.
Woodards Raccoon.
Mr. I, J. Woodard near Schlatter
ville, in this county, a reliable citizen,
informs u* that he killed a large well
grown raecoou in his horse lot last
Friday Morning. The ’coon had made
a den under the barn, and being no
dogs shout the place lo molest it it had
been there, apparently, for several
mouths, the b;pn was latticed around
to keep hogs from under it, all but
one small scuttle bole, Mr. W. says
for the chickens to go under and pick
up the corn that dropped through the
floor, and this was also a scuttle hole
for the varment. Mr. Woodard sa>s
that tbe coon had become so uune
that he would not attempt to run after
jt was probed out with a fishing cane.
Complimentary Notice.
We are in receipt of some beautifully
executed chromo-lithographic seed
packets from I). Lakorkth <£ Suva
Philadelphia, the pioneer Seed men
I hi* continent. The artistic designs
and coloring art so true to nature and
superior to the ordinary illustrations
as to be beyond comparison. But the
merit of illustration is not the mo* 1
important feature, ’tis the contents of
the packets, and the quality of their
Seeds has been proved by tests extend¬
ing up to a century. Their Almanac
and Catalogue is the best yet, and
should be in every country household.
It is mailed, post-paid, to all who
apply for it.
A TOWN HALL.
Occasionally we hear tne remark
“ Blackslmar needs a Town Hall, and
needs it bad,” but we never hear ol a
way to get it. There is a way it we
would only to go to work, but the
trouble seems to be lack of public spir
it, public enterprise and energy to car
ry it through. Now- we dou’t mean
to say that Blackshetu is totally defi¬
cient in public spirit, because we know
the contrary to be true, but the trouble
is simply this; wo have no one now
who is willing to lay aside his business
t*»r awhile and devote his time and
build energies towards Hall. getting up money to
ibis That is all we need.
Eel that one man or two men as the
case may be, go to work and they can
get the money. The men who will
subscribe are not going to go an mud
soliciting some one to take their money
ami build a Hall, ami it is not right or
to lw* expected that they should, but
at the same lime the writer of this
article knows that Jlbey are willing to
coii'ibute the money.
Now it wo will consider this subject
seriously into consideration we will have a Hull, lake
these tacts and
determine that the Hall shall be built.
VVe have no Hall hi which to hold
public meetings. No place where our
Dramatic Association or any travelling
troupe can give an Entertainment.
No Hall or place of any kind where a
Ball or even a Social Dance can l»e
given. Now these are startling tacts
when we come to consider them, but
they are never the less strictly true.
'The very idea of a town of 12(H) souls
not having a hall of any shape or kind
widien its corporate limits is a subject
for contemplation. We need this hall
lor the credit of the town, for our own
interests public and private and tor our
own pleasure, and lets see to it that we
get it.
Them is no use in putting tiff; we
are ju*t as web able lb-day li build it
as we will be ten years front now, and
we will certainly never need it aiu
worse than we do ut present.
It has been suggested that a stock
company be organized to build it, and
we are inclined to tin* plan ourselves,
but any way lets build it, stock com
pany o: no stock company, whether
timber floats or not. If we have got
to live in Bhuksheat one year or all
our live* let* live while we do live
Lets build the llall.
“How do you manage,” said a lady to
her tneud, “Ui ap|>e<i >0 happy »fl the tuur?"
“I alw.ivs have Parker's tliuccr Tonic hauviy ”
was the reply,” thus kt-epiuysvlf and iu good
