THE SOUTHEAST GEORGIAN,
Walter Wyatt, Editor and Proprietor.
WOODBINE, GA., SEPT. 8, 1899.
Little Local Lines.
Mrs, Sal 1 ie Lang is visiting
at Senator Lang’s,
Warren Mizell is clerking at
Foster aud Lang’s.
{Several members of Mr.
George Mizell’s family are sick
with fever.
Miss Sue Lang has returned
to Woodbine. She aud her
brothers Green and Waller
will qttend school here.
Mrs, Rosa Lee Russell, of
Tompkins, was here Tuesday
pn route to Savannah and
Meldrim. She returned Thurs
day.
Mrs. A. M Peeples moved
from the hotel back to her own
}iouse last Monday, and it
seems like old times to see her
down there.
Mr. L. E. Lang, after enjoy
ing several days hunting and
tripping the light fantastic toe
among his Camden county rel
atives and friends, returned to
Klondike on Thursday.
The editor and ivifc received
jasf Monday an invitation to a
dance to be given that
ing at the summer home of
Hon. and Mrs. 1). P. Rose,
and we tried to get there, but
got left, and missed what we
hear was a very pleasant event.
Mr. F. A. Whitford went
back to Bailey’s Mills last
week to resume his work there
but returned on Saturday with
a regular case of chills and fe
ver, and he says it is altogeth
er too regular to suit him, as
he has had a chill every day.
Mr. Davis has had his place
pf business ceiled throughout,
added a great deal of
to the front room, put a shade
other improvements. He in
torins us he will shortly add
other lines to his stock in
trade.
Mrs. Parries opened the
school here last Monday, but
owing to the existence of a
few mild cases of malarial fe
ver among the scholars the at
tendance up to date has been
very slim. By the first of next
month, however, the school
house will be full and the
school in a flourishing condi
tion.
Senator Lang and his friends
have been very successful in
deer hunting since the season
opened last Friday. We un
derstand that they have killed
pine in some three or four
days’ hunting. We were re
membered by the senator last
{Saturday and return thanks
for a very fine piece of veni
sou wliicli, it is needless to
say, was thoroughly enjoyed.
Mr. W. W. Cushing, of
White Oak, is overhauling the
hotel building for Dr. Wright
and will put it in fine condi
tion. The doctor was here the
first of the week and informs
us that he will move just as
soon as the house is ready for
him, which about Mr. Cushing says
will be in two weeks.
We will be glad to welcome
Dr. Wright and his family to
Woodbine.
The dance of the season, as
far as Woodbine is concerned,
will occur tonight at. the resi
dence of Mrs. Peeples. It is to
be given by the young men in
honor of Miss Eva Swift, the
charming and popular) young
lady \vho has been spending
the summer here with her
brother and his wife, Dr. and
Mrs, A. K. Swift. Miss Eva
expects to terminate her visit
lere shortly aud return to lur
home at across, much to the
regret of the many friends she
has won since her advent
among us.

A Victim of Overconfidence.
“This bill isn't what I had a right to
expect,” grumbled the man who had
stepped up to the cashier’s window at
the gas company’s office.
“Two dollars, hey?” said the cashier,
glancing at the bill. “That doesn't
seem so very exorbitant. What was it
the month before?”
“Four dollars.”
“You didn’t kick on that, did you?”
“No.”
“Why is this so much smaller?”
“The house was shut up half the
month.”
“Then what are you complaining
about? Isn't $2 about right?”
“Yes; but, blame it, I made a bet of
$5 the other day that the bill would be
as big as usual!”—Chicago Tribune.
A Warning Phase.
“What made you break off the argu
ment so suddenly?”
“Didn’t you hear what he said?” ask
ed the cautious citizen.
“Yes. When you left, he had just
said, ‘Let us talk this over calmly and
reasonably.’ ”
“That’s why I went. Whenever a
man says ‘Let us talk it over calmly
and reasonably’ you may depend on
his being so angry it won't take more
than three words to make him fight.”
