It is said that a woman has
grown insane because she
could not get into Kansas
society. However, Pittsburg
is still open to her.
The Indianapolis Sun is
not very illuminating when
it says that an idea is the re

and sane thought. It strikes
us we have heard of insane
ideas.
The woman en route to
Washington to the D. A. R.
and who was so boisterous
that she had to be put off the
train, was, perhaps, trying to
keep herself supple and in
training for the tempestuous
exercises of that non-deliber

The preliminary prepara
tions in New York for the
great International Peace
Conference to be held at the
Hague are significant, no
matter how great may be
skepticism and cynicism as
to results. That the
must finally come when na
tions will learn war no more,
cm not he doubted by
who have followed the trend
of evolution, and much less
by those who believe in a be
nign providence. History
and statistics teach us that
wars are less frequent and
less sanguinary now thau
they were in former centuries
and we know that though
they are “Hell” they are far
less cruel than of old. Do
not these signs point to the
final extinguishment of crude
and barbaric means for the
settlement of international
disputes? There is not a
ruler to-day, uot even the
Kaiser, the Czar or the Mika
do, that would be able to get
up and unannounced declare
war, but almost any ruler
could have dona this two cen
turies ago, and for causes that
would be considered trivial
or insufficient now. “War is
a game, which were the peo
ple wise, tings would not play
at,” was said many years ago.
The people are wiser now
than then and war is less fre
quent. With the increase of
wisdom tiiere will be an in
crease in the infrequency of
war. Die wiser people of
the world are combining and
plotting peace as never be
fore, for only recently, as time
goes, have they been brought
close together by steam and
electricity.

A Clear Call.
1 'It’s very noble and lovely of
you, Eliie. to give so much of your
tithe to that work among the tene
ment children. I’m sure I admire
you for it; but for my part, I
never had any call to that kind of
work. 5 J
‘’Any call?” Elsie’s eyes were
gravely (Questioning
“Yes, of course I suppose
felt called to go into it,
you?”
“I don’t know, I don’t think I
ever thought of it just in that way
} I » had aw . the tune need and of something strength to that do
—'that was all. But wouldn’t that
be call enough?”
Would it not, indeed? What
plainer call, can there be than a
need that we can meet? What
of more the eloquent appeal than the cry
hungry / iittle ones around
us tor . i bread , that , , we can give? ■ o

same way to men to-day that we
are taught he sometimes spoke in
olden times, but he has
takable ways of making his will
known to every one whose own
will is to know it. We have but
to keep our ears open to hear his
beckoning. Every opportunity is
a call, every out-stretched hand
God’s that^ ours beconing can meet hand to helpfully is
us.
To most of us no other call will
ever come than that which comes
through human lips, no other
than ihe revealing of a vacant
place that we may fill, a need for
work that we can do.
