FIGHT WTTH A BURGLAR.
Onr worthy Mayor, Hen, C.H. Moore,
hud an encounter last night with a bur
glar, iu,which both the bnrglar and
himself were shot. The particulars,
1 .nving ont minor details are these;
For some weeks Messrs Moore & Tut
tle have been missing goods out of their
store, and Mr. Moore, aud onr excel
lent town .marshal, Mr. W. L. Roberts,
h ive sal up several nights watching for
bnrglers. Last night, Mr, B, being ab
sent from town. Mr. Moore watched by
himself, .beiug secrete in the back yard
of the store, aud armed with a shot gun
and pistol. The weary hours dragged
al.ong until near Ihuee o’clock, when a
negro man quietly got over the . fence
into theyard and commenced ..working
at tho door, putting bis hand through
the cat hole and pushisg the .bar out
with an old sword. He got !the doer
open and started off, probably after
confederates, wiien'Mayor Moore called
at him to stop. The negro started to
run, and Mr. M, fired at him with the
gun, and followed atound to the corner
of Meiue and Washington street. Near
Mr. T. J. Caters residence be came up.
on two negroes aud ordered them to
halt, and as he approached one of them,
filed a pistol at him wounding him se
verely in the thigh. The negroes then
ran down the street, and Mr. M. being,
nnable to follow further shot«t them'
again with tl.e other barrel of his gars.:
This morning Mr. Win. Brunson, one
of the best detectives we war saw, got I
a clue which pointed directly to one,
Green Eilev, and others. Green’s house
was searched and a.considerable quan
tity of goods belonging to Moore & Tut-,
tie found in a triink. Greed was at the
time being secreted by some negroes in
town, and search for Lnn was vigorously
curried on. About oue o’clock deputy
.Marshal J. F. Humphreys arreded
Green on Bull Street, and turned him
over to Mi.rshul Roberts who was driv
ing a hot trail. Oil beiug examined the
prisoner was found to be shot iu the
lower part of the back and iu the leg
with small shot, tho kind Mr. Moore,
had used. The hat, sword, small Smith
k iVesson pistol and ball* were all found,
identified and the raneel lodged is jail.
