It is earnestly hoped that every church and Sunday school in the Asso ciation will send representatives to this conven ion, and that a grand impetus will be given to the Sunday school work. Brethren will remember that this convention is called in pursuance of a resolution passed at the last session of the Association, and that a general united action is necessary to insure suc cess. L. O. Niles. Chairman S. S. Committee. Bret Harte did not carry off all the imagination of the power to create in teresting fiction when he left the Pacif ic slope. There is a corespondent of the Los Angeles Express, one of filibus ter W’alker’s Nicaragua soldiers, who can do something in that line by no means despicable. Twenty or more of the churches.in Granada, rich in plate and jewels, were pilaged by Walker’s orders, and the spoil, worth “many millions,” was loaded on a steamer and carried to the yiliiage of St. George, on Lake Nicaragua. It was there’ buried under a room of r a certain honse, and all the persons in charge of it sworn to secrecy on promise of. future rewards. Walker find previously told the rest of his followers that the treasure had been shipped to New Orleans, where it would be used in the purchase of mili tary supplies. Nearly all the party who buried the treasure were sent away on a secret expedition, and theD, by Walksr.s orders, were pursued with cavalry, and on being overtaken wore shot as deserters without ceremony. Another one was shol in a subsequent battle under suspicious circumstances, and the present survivor, seeing how “things were going.” thought it was high time for him to go, which he did, returning to the United States. The “enemy,” that is to say, the owners of that eountry'and the pillager, got pos session of the village of St, George, and Walker vainly fought three months to recover it, and was soon after captured and shot. Some years later the survt vor of the burying party concluded that the time for resurrection had arrived, and made a partnership with the Cap tain of a schooner for the purpose. But when he arrived at St. George lie din not know where he was. During Walker’s siege the old town had been amrihiliatod, and a Dew one built upon its site. The two men rented every house in Ihe street and dug up all the cellars, but found ho trace of the treas ure. Fm.dly the authorities began to suspect them, and they were arrested iind sent oat of the couutry. He has no ambition to try to recover it, because the government down there would take it away from him—which, considering his rights to it, would in deed be very unjust and tyrannical. The claims of the churches from which lbs plunder was originally taken do net seem to have entered into any of these calculations. Poetic justice would fin ish off this lomauce by restoring the. plate and the. jewels to the shrines where they belong. But then, it is urn our story, and we are not responsible for this failure to properly conclude the drama.—Detroit Free Trusts. THE PROGRESS OF THE PLAGUE. The true character of the terribly fa tal disease which has broken out in the Russian province of Astrakhan was not clearly defined by the earliest advices concerning it. Later news, however, leaves little doubt that it is really the plague—the same awful malady that devastated London in the 8i.-veutee.uth century just before the Great Fire. The disease is a fever, characterized by the appearance of boils nr carbuncles on various parts of the body . Except for the increased cleanliness observed by the inhabitants of Western Europe, to the condition and case of their dwellings and in personal habits, there seems no reason why the plague should find its way to England now as readily as it did in former ages. In deed, many of the leading English med ical authorities openly procla m their disbelief in the efiieacy of any quaran tine measures to .stop it. They prefer to rely upon sanitary mtthods at home, and treatment by medicine, in Case the dreaded disease makes its appearance. OPPOSITION TO THE CHINESE. A natural washing machine has' beeD discovered in Tulare county, California. A boiling spring was found by a follow with an ingenious tnru of mind’ and lie at once secured a water right, con- ; structed a cloth >s-wrioger to be run bv ; a water-wheel at one side of the spring, where it boils over into another of clear colder water into which he placed a sack of blue indigo. The ranchers of tke settlement throw their cloth:s. into the water, which has a whirling motion, and are drawn in and out of sight. Iu about five minutes they come to the surface, float to the wringer and are run through into the other spring, where they are rinsed by passing through an- orher wringer. In less than thirty minutes the washing is done. The process of robbing a stage coach is very simple. It is the American idea that the really brave traveller will have one or two revolvers in his boots and a knife down his back, and wLeu the i r.- gand appears he snonld Spring ont at them, bringing one or two of them down before he touches the ground, and shouting, ‘Aha, base robber, begone!'— I haTe known Americans who started ont for a stage journey with these re volvers and these ideas. Bat the base robbers will not begone-. What the American or any other traveller really does do is to hand over his revolvers and knives,.and then swfur by every thing that's holy and good that he hasn’t anything about him of any val ue, and then go down into his pockets and bring out purses and watches and other little weaknesses, and hand them oyer, too. When thirty or forty men suddenly appear alongside a stage-coach, each man with a loaded l'ific pointed.at the passengers, a traveller is veryjikely to forget which pocket he has his re volvers in. The searching process is done with great skill. I cannot tell it belter than in the words of a man' who had the experience: ‘The first thing we knew,” said be, thore were forty or fifty brigands aronnd the dilligeuce, and the horses were stopped. Before J bad time to turn around I bad a revolver pointed at each side of my head, and was told to hand over my money. I had §300 in notes along, but had hidden them in one of the cushions, and had only wo t three dollars in silver in my pockets.
