r fHE Home J ournal, USE THIS BRAND —The dog tax is making friends alt over the State. —Eggs at five cents a dozen at Cat Creek, Lowndes county. —Several persons were stunned by a stroke of lightning in Macon last Thurs day evening. —A horn snake, says theGainsritfe Ea gle, with a defensive horn two inches loDg on its tail, has been killed near that place. —Mr. W. H. Bearden, of Martin, Colquitt county, feel from his wagon and was crushed to death. —Savannah is in angurating measures to build a monument to Sergeant Jas per, and have Georgia’s Centennial on October 9th. —The Dahlonega. Signal says a fine nugget of gold was picked up on the old master grohnd last Wedhesday. —The Americas Republican has on ex hibition a hen egg which is without a shell, and has a tail attached. | —A Mr. James Neal was recently set upon by highwaymen in Walker county, knocked senseless and robbed of 5290. —The Prasbyterions of Eastman, who are under the pastoral care of Bev. Wil liam McKay, of Macon, are raising funds to build a church. —The largest bream ever caught in that .section, says the Hawkinskille Dis patch, was caught by Mr. Joe Collier. It measures fifteen inches in length, seven in breadth, and four in thick ness. —It is stated that the murderer, Coleman, now confined at McPherson Ban-ticks, Atlanta, grows more end more hopeful that tlie sentence of death passed upon him fourteen years ago will be commuted. —On Wednesday last the check facto ry of the Athens Manufacturing Com pany caught fire, and for some time it was feared that it would be destroyed. Later on, however, the fire was fortu nately subdued, with but nominal loss. —Copious and refreshing rains in Spalding county have made the hearts of the farmers of tliat section glad. The crops are all in fine condition, with, perhaps, the exception of the oats, which were injured by the co^cl Weather of the early spring. — The Waynesboro Herald learns that a few nights ago the residence of Mr. Wm. W. Rhodes was destroyed by fire, together frith his corn-crib, a large quantity of Corn, and one or two out houses. Mr. Rhodes lives near the line of Burke stud Richmond and is a go- ahead farmer. The property destroyed Was not insured. —The telephonic exchange in Atlanta is becoming more and more popular, and the Web of wires is being woven more and more thickly daily. The ex periments so far are pronounced very satisfactory, and it is expected that in a short time at least five hundred busi ness houses of all classes of that city will he, on speaking terras with each other. —The Albany Heirs says the people of Baker ci unty, are bound to have a steamboat on the Flint The boat will be u stern-wheeler, and wiii be ready be tween the 1st and 15.h of next Septem ber. Bidnbridge has stock in the new enterprise to lbt> amount of seven hun dred dollars; and Albany is seriously considering what she ought to do nil 1 der the ciicnmstances. —The Quitman Reporter records an other shocking case of accidental shoot ing in Brooks county Thursday, which resulted iu ilie death of a little daugh ter of a Mr. Reese at tire bands of her brother. It seems that the children got hold of a loaded pistol and were play ing with it, when it accidentally went off, the ball taking effect in, and break ing the neck of the little girl, who died instantly. —A gentletnan who has lately been on a visit t > Lincoln county,, informs the Crawfordville Democrat that every man there has his “pockets full of rocks,” which he is anxious to have tested for gold, silver or capper. Every body seems to suppose he has a valua ble mine of some sort on his lauds, and is continually on the lookout for “indications.” Says the Democrat: “The mines of that country are des tined to briag^t into notice at no dis tant day-.” —The red bream in ponds in the neighborhood of Albany are dying by the hundreds. It was at first thonght that they were poisoned, but this idea has been abandoned, and it seems that a mysterious disease has ntade its ap pearance among them. The Advertiser says that before dying the fish become perfectly blind, and their eyes have an opaque milky appearance. —The Hamilton Visitor says that on Tuesday of List week a very severe hail storm occurred in the vicinity of Ca tania. The hail lay upon the ground in heaps three or four inches deep, in places, when the storm was ever. Much damage was done to corn, fruit and cottoD, so much so that all who live in the track will have to replant near ly their entire crops. _ Fortunately the track was not more than a naif or three- quarters oha mile in width. —The Gainesville Eagle says that Mr. W. McGuire, of Dan son county, the owner of the celebrated McGuire gold mine, was in town a few days ago, ap parently ii- a g jodhmaor with himself and the balance of mankind. Like the most of miners who know that they have a good thing, Mr. McGuire was "rather reticent in regard to his business, but it was plain that he was very well satiified with his surroundings and pros pects. In answer to a direct question as to the present product of his mine, Mr McGuire informed tun Eagle that in three days, last week^four hands made —Notice the change of schedule on the Perry railroad. The recent rains have done much good, and field cropB are reported as growing finely. —Day-labor is in demand. The farm ers around Perry are offering good pay for cotton-choppers. —The council is having the rock sewers on Main and Carrdll streets cleaned put. A good work. —The council have had the old armo ry hall over otir office cleaned up and ar ranged for a Council room, —The Reading Club and Library As sociation will meet in the library Hall on Friday evening next at nine o’clock. A full attendance is requested. —Mr. T. J, Cater has had a very sub stantial rock curbing built in front of his store, which adds no little to the ap pearance of things in that part of town, —-She ife a negro woman, and can Carry three buckets of water at once— one on her head and one in each hand. Her name is Bob Gordon, and she re sides in Perry -, —Our Public Library is still rapidly growing in public favor. Nearly every day new members are added, and the contributions, in some instances, are quite liberal. —Mr. James R. Turrentine present ed us last week with one of the finest turnips we have ever seen in this sec tion at this season of the year. It weighed four pounds, and was of the purple-top variety. —We learn that a highly enjoyable exhibition was given by tbe pupil’s of Miss Scott’s school at Buff’s chapel re cently. Charades, tableaux, etc., were rendered in a manner that was highly creditable to both teacher and pupiis. —Our sprightly little ncighber, the Fort Yalley Advertiser, will not publish a semi-weekly issue through the sum mer, bnt will issue the Sunday Adver tiser Until fall, when the semi 1 weekly will be resumed. —We learn that- there was a most en joyable picnic at the Factory on last ■Saturday. Many of the sweetest of the sweet Perry girls we.re. in attendance, and the fishing was splendid, if they didn’t get a bite. It is astonishing how much patience a young couple in love have got when they get off to them selves with no one around to disturb the fish, —The A. M. E. Sunday school of this place, together with schools from the country, hud their annual picnic on Friday last in -the grove below Col. S. D. Fallen’a residence. They had a big tuihout, headed, by drum music.— Judging from their looks, and the amount of tain that fell, they didn’t have a dry time. •—Mr. Cofield, our artist, is just begin ning a very elegant landscape as a pres - ratforthe Library. When finished, fre think the Association will have a picture that they will be very proud of, r8 fre all know Mr Cofieids qualifica tions to excel in such matters. There will be a handsome entrance; and the fence of barbed wire will be of six strands run ning all the way around, When finish ed it frill, we think, be very handsome. The entire cost will not exceed §150.-- The present council deserve great cred it for what they are doing in this direc tion. —Out Commissioners have the I Court House in good trim for court next week. The court room, the stairs lead ing thereto, and all the offices hav6 re cently been re-carpeted with a very neat and substantial matting. Oar Sheriff deserves great Credit for the mauner m which he has things arranged around about and within the Court House. —The congregation of the Methodsit Church, we understand, will, during thy Summer, make all necessary repairs and many valuable improvements on their building. . To aid in doing this the ladies of the Church have opened an ice ’cream saloon in the brick store, which will this week be kept open on Friday afternoon, but during court will be opened every evening. We hope they may receive all, the patronage which they deserve. A colored, with occasional flushes, of a circumscribed spot oh one or both cheeks; the eyes become dull; the pu pils dilate; an azure semicircle runs along the lower eye-lid; the nose is ir ritated, swells, and sometimes bleeds: a swelling of the upper lip; occasional headache, with humming or throbbing of the ears; an unusual secretion of saliva; slimy or furred tongue; breath very foul, particularly in the morning; appetite variable, sometimes voracious, with a gnawing sensation of the stom ach, at others, entirely gone; fleeting pains in the stomach; occasional nausea and vomiting; violent pains throughout the abdomen; bowels ir regular, at times costive; stools slimy- not unfrequently tinged with blood; belly swollen and hard; urine turbid; respiration occasionally difficult, and accompanied by hiccough; cough sometimes dry and convulsive; uneasy and disturbed sleep, with grinding of the teeth; temper variable, but gener ally irritable, &c. 'The difficulty was between two negro convicts on the plantation of Mr. Chess Howard early Sunday morning, and resulted iu one cutting the other’s throat, killing him almost" instantly.
