Clark & Marsiiburne last week * 0 ff their pond to repair their mill , Bn a a large number of people met d ather in the fish that would be thus jfAithA very limited supply of their Itnral element.—One party led by Messrs Buff, Braswell & Scot made f^hauls, and the result was one bun Ld and fifty pounds of fish. They hereof several varieties, trout, perch snekers, jacks, &c. Mr. Scott says vrbile hauling in the sane, he caught a trout in the gills with his hand, but its strength was such that he might as well have tried to hold a wild mule, as im mediately itgaye a wrench or two, broke bis grip, darted away. He says that it ¥ as the largest ever seen or heard of in this country by any one who was pres et, and weighed at least;t wen ty pounds. fte would have complied with our affidavit rule hut no officer was conven ient. Several witneses testify to the tragic attidude of Mr. S. at the time of the struggle, aud some were fearful for „ while that we would have to record another Jonah caso. Mother Goose.—As will be seen by the announcement in another column, the ladies and children will present Mother Goose and all the little goslings, at Cook’s Hall next Wednesday night. The entertainment will be one of the most novel and amusing ever given in onr town, and no one who appreci ates a good thing and hearty laugh can Afford to stay away. As it is for the combined benefit of tha churches, and the ladies have exerted themselves to , socore a a grand success of the affair, we hopo every citizen of our part of the county will come out. The admission fee i < but a trifle, and you will more than get the worth of your money, be sides contribute to a go.od cause. Don’t forget or neglect to come out, and bring all your family. iTOWN a Sid county. —Colton picking is beginning in ear nest. — Mr. F. A. jobson is building an ad dition to his dwelling. —Messrs. Cooper & Staley have our thanks for the two largest potatoes of the season. —The Kehoboth Baptist Sunday School Association will meet in Perry Bozeman’s Warehouse, Hawkins- yilie.—We call especial attention to the advertisement of Messrs. C. M. Bozemnu and Sons in another column. They have a most convenient and com modious fire-proof brick warehouse, and do cotton merchant in Georgia stands higher than Judge Bozeman us a sales man. These gentlemen conduct their business with an eye single to the inter ests of their patrons, and their well known integrity, experience, and promptness will insure satisfaction to all who send them cottcn. This firm also sells cotton gins, presses, cane mills, kettles, and castings of all kinds. National Hotel Macon-—We in vite attention to the card of this house in another column. It has just been leased and opened by Mrs, W. F. Brown, widow of tbe universally be loved Wm. Bfown, of t he Brown House, and Mr. Frank B, JEieville, a popular hotel man, for years eouuected with the Lanier House. The National lias been thoroughly repaired, re arranged, and fitted up with entirely new furniture, carpets, bedding, etc., and in point of comfort, convenience, fare and atten tion, has no superior. Quito an item is the free bath feature for guests, which are always ready in either hot or cold water, or shower. Try the National under the new regime. Planters’ Warehouse.—Mr. A. J. Martin has leased the Planters’ Brick Fire-proof Warehouse in Port Valley, tod is prepared to store and sell cotton on the most favorable terms. Mr. Mar tin ip well known as a gentleman of the strictest integrity, and his • experience in the cotton business enables him to get the very top of the market for his customers. We unhesitatingly com mend him to onr readers as hi every nay worthy of their confidence and pat- ronaga, and we speak from an acquaint ance of several years, as well as the uni- Tersal esteem in which he is held. The Centennial Gin.—Mr. O. H. Miller, of Port Valley, is now shipping cut scores of his justly celebrated. Cen tennial Gins. It is recognized as a first- class gin in overy respect, and we are glad to see the genius and skill of our county being appreciated. Miss Ida Tbarpe left last week for Cherokee Female College at Home. Her brother, Mr. A. H. Tharpe, accom- panied_her. The Perry Baptist church has sent the bell recen tlyferected hack to the foundry, as its tone was not good, and will soon have another new one. The Presbyterians have kindly loaned their bell until the new one arrives.- —-Messrs. Roberts and Butner are fixing up an excellent half-mile race track on the new fair greunds opposite Perry, which they will use for training their horses. *—Onr’ correspondents, regular as well as occasional, will do well to note the change in the postal laws, which allows manuscript for publication to be spnt at the rate of one cent for two ounces, provided the envelope or_pacltage is not sealed. —Messrs. K;Ilen£& Singleton have some time since ' completed the new bridge at Limestone creek on the Hayneville road. It is nearly three hundred feet long, as level as a floor, and is one of the neatest and best bridges ever built in Houston county. The abutments will be built in a week or two, but the old bridge is yet passa ble, but is not considered safe for heavy loads. —Mr. Andrew Smoak, road overseer, has built a‘splendid road across Big Indian swamp on the old causeway at West’s bridge on the Hayneville road. Sand has been hauled in and the old causeway work covered so deeply that one can i.ow trot nicely from this side to the bridge—some two or three hun dred yards. A rough railing on each side or fenco_to keep slock outj of the boggy ditches would he an addional improvement. —Capt. J. G. Royal has-finished the large stone dam at the New Hope gully and filled above it with dirt. The road also has been graded down so as to be on a level with the filling. This kind of engineering is, we think, too expen sive for county roads, but is worth a trial. Gapt. R. has carried out his con tract faithfully, but will not make a for tune out of it. A less industrious and energetic man would have lost money on the job. Religious —Rev. Jap. H, Nall, D. D. of Columbus, will begin a meeting at the Presbyterian church at P -rrv, on Thursday before the first Sunday in September. All are invited to attend. —Regular meeting of Houston Fail- Association will be held on Saturday at 10 o’clock. Important business is now transacted at every -meeting. Mem bers will take notice and be on band. — All who wish to become members can do so on application to Edward Jack- son, Secretary, and compliance with the rules. . The fair is on a solid foot ing and moving on nicely. —The parlor entertainment at Mr. J. W. Mann’s last nigh was even more largely attended than tbe last one. The audience numbered nearly a hundred, and was finely entertained. The ladies deserves great credit for their good work, and we are glad to see them liberally patronized. —The cotton crop of Houston will not be anything to brag on this year. While it is far from a failure, and while there are many real fine crops, the crop of the comity will be below an average one. In many sections the rnst is mak ing an end of the top crop, and we hear of the caterpillars in many.places. The principal damage -is being done by the rust, and if it continues asmall late crop will he the result. The corn crop being short, our planters who wish to prosper, intend putting in a large area in oats and whept to help out in the lines of provender and bread. We Iook forward with great interest to the openning the cotton market next Monday, and we hope the price will star-t well and keep np daring the season. —Messrs, Clarke & Marshbnrne have the chain gang at work on a contract building the Houston Factoiy dam Higher. —Messrs. Clark & Marshburce have bought Tliurman’s mill four miles south of Perry. i They are putting it m order, and will have something to say to onr readers next, week. PERSONAL, Hon. Kittrel J. Rainey is building a huge wagon for Mr Byrom of Dooly County. which is warranted to haul fifteen bales of cotton. This is just half a car load. It is a fine job of woik. Dr. Havis and Judge Holtzclaw have bonght the county right to a patent iron trace aDd tug fastener which is the best thing in that way we ever saw. By its use a horse can be hitched to or unhitched from a buggy in a moment, the trace and back strap being fastened by tbe same operation. JMr. Joe McLendon, tbe first printer ever employed-on The Home Journal, died last week at Bohngbroke, of con sumption. Mrs J. D. Choate, of Hawkinsville, was in Perry last week on a visit. Mis Carrie Fittzgerald, of Macon, is i visiting the family of Mr. J. W. Maun. —We had a call the other day from Mr. J. E. Warren of Leesburg, for a copy, of the third edition of his book of the above title. As its name indicates, it is a serio-humorous autobiography, and is pronounced by many good critics as equal to “Major Jones’ Courtship.” The public will give this edition a cor dial welcome, coming, as it does, from the pen of one of the leading humorists of the country. It is for sale in Perry by Messrs. Cooper & Cater—price 50 cents. For some three weeks past Rev. J. B. Culpepper has been conducting a series of meetings afcShiloh church in the Up per Fifth District of this county, about one mile west of Busby ville. This is a Methodist church tvhieh.is in the cir cuit over which the minister named is iu charge is placed. We learn that pri or to the meeting which has just closed, the church had only about fifteen mem bers in full fellowship. The post r has labored with great zeal and fidelity: and it seems’liis labors Lave been blessed" far beyond his most ardent expecta tions* He has been assisted during the meeting by Rov. M>-. McDonald, tbe Presiding Elder, and R v. Richard Cain, a local minister of Bibb county. The people for six or seven miles around have attended regularly, and the deep est feeliDg has been apparent. While scores went up for prayer at every ser vice, many backsliders were warned in to a new resoh'e to amend and contiuue faithful unto death. Conversions, as announced, were made- at almost every meeting. On Sunday the meeting closed, and the large church was filled with an im mense congregation while large num bers were uuable to gain admission.— We learn that sixty-eight added to the church during the revival season were received, and the ordinance of Bap tism administered to a large majority of them. Many .preferred to be im mersed, and these were baptized at Leverett’s pond, near the church. This is considered one of the most re markable revival that has been held in this county for many years, and its re sults will be manifested in that section as long as time shall Ipst. May other communities and other churches be visited by like seasons ot refreshing from on high, until all shall return to . the ser vice of the true and living God. TUTT’S PILLl INTRODUCED, >865.
