Legislature have actually been talked
to death this summer; and yet two or
.three of the biggest bores in that .body
have, already been mentioned in con

It is reported that a.hunting party of
yoitug men from Dallas Texas, were at
tacked by Indians on September lltli in
Panhandle county, and seventeen of
tutor number were killed nfter a two
days fight.
‘ The celebration of the one hundreth
anniversary of the death of Sergeant
Jasper who was killed during the sage
of Savannah by the American and
French forces on October 9th, 1779,
■will lake place next Thursday. The
cornerstone of the splendid Jasper mon
ument will then be laid, and the- pro
gramme will render the day the most
memorable anniversary ever held in the
the South. The memorial nddress will
be delivered by Gen. Jno. B. Gordon,
and the military review and parade will
embrace a large number of companies
of artillery, infantry and cavalry of the
volunteer militia of this and adjoining
States. The Savannah Morning News
on the 9th will be in every way worthy
of ths- occasion, and will give a historir
cal review of the seige, illustrated by
maps, diagrams, and portraits of the
distinguished actors in the bat He, be
sides; an account of the centennial and
the address in full, and much; other
most interesting and valuable matter.
All the railroads leading to Savan
nah will run large extra trains on the
8th, and sell excursion tickets to Savan
nah and return at very low rates. The
Central road will take excursionists
from Perry to Savannah and return for
§4 fO: Very many of our citizens are
going. All should remember that the
excursion goes down on the 8th of Oc
tober, Wednesday, leaving Perry at 4
o’clock in the evening and getting to
Savannah at 7 o’clock next morning.
Tickets good for ten days, to return on
any train. This will be a. fine opportu
nity to visit onr sea coastmctropolisata
moderate cost.
The leading men of all political par
ties in Missouri have come together
heartily in support of the movement to
erect a monument to the memory of
General Frank Blair. .Nothing but
praise i3 heard now, at the mention of
his name, and yet that State denied him
the United States Senatorship but a
short timebefor he hied.
A dispatch from the Viceroy of Ins$a
announces thatJYakoob Ithan has sent
a message to General. Baker, requesting
the General to receive him in camp.
The General replied that he would meet
him a mile from camp. Canal 'is in a
state of anarchy, and the gates of the
city are closed.

Southern Cotton Manufacture, —
The late 'report Of the National Cotton
Exchange places the total consumption
of cotton by Southern mills during the
year 1878-79 at 186.489 bales, against
147,747 bales the previous year, show
ing a gam of 20 per cent. Georgia is
by far the largest cotton manufacturer,
having 160,000 spindles in operation,
.North.Carolina standing second, and
Sotrih ; Carolina third. Texas is the
smallest in the whole list, her consum-
fion during the past year having been
only 381 bales. While the consumption
in the Southern States last year showed
an increase of 20 per cent., the gain in
that of the North was only 2 per cent.

the next few years is expected to sh w

The Darien Gazette says that the out
look of the limber market is very en
couraging. The coastwise demand is
expected to exceed anything for years,
and the prospect for pitch pine is
thought by those interesting to be flat
tering. At present the demand at Da-
rion for equare and scab timber prom
ises to be far in excess of that of any
previous season, particularly for early
dsilvery, and a fair supply even now
would command extremely high prices,
as there fa uo stock of either class on
baud at that port at preseut.

A national militia convention is to be
assembled at St..Louis on the 30th of
this month, to take action on the neces^
sary militia reform in tho- several States.
Aa appeal is to be made to Congress to
increase the annual appropriation for-
distributing arms and ordinance stores to
the. militia from §209,000 to §1,000,000.
It is proposed that the troops in aU the
States.shall be uniformed after apattern
to be determined by a board of experts,
and that they be governed by a set of
national militia regulations, to be pro-,
tided also by a board appointed far that
purpose.
A little boy about six years old was
lost in Augusta on Thmsday, and im
mediately the alarm was given to the
Central Telephone office, and the occur-,
rence was telephoned all over the city
in a very short time. In this way all
the watchmen on their beats were in
formed of the affair, and the Httls fellow
was speedily found.-
