OUR COUNTY PAIR.
Beteb than Ever—A Beautiful Expo
sition of Home Peod dctions— Good
Attendance from Houston and all
oub Neighbor Counties.
Our fair wa6 all the talk last week,
and those who did not visit it missed a
treat. The weather was clear and rath
er wum, and the streets just a lttle
dusty, but it was pleasant enough in
tbe shade.
.The entry books' were opened Mon
day, and all that day and Tuesday Mr.
Jaekson and several assistants were kept
busy at work.''' It soon became evident
that the ladies were determined to take
the lead this year, and the result was
that their departmeuts"more than dou
bled any previous displays therein, and
the exhibits were of far better quality.
The grounds presented a very pretty
appearance, the neat buildings and
coops and cattle penB having been
whitewashed and otherwise greatly im
proved. Tbe band pav.’hon Lad been
moved around in front of the grand
stand, and the sweet music of the Perry
Cornet'Band, .led by Prof. Guttenbei*-
.ger, floated through tbe grove and out
into the town. Then there was that
other chorus of music peculiar to fairs
—the lowing of cattle, the neighing of
horses, the cackling of fowls, etc., etc.,
in whioli there is a charm to all who
can truly love the farm, and its thou
sand and one winning features.
agriculture.
There was a profuse exhibition of cot
ton, bales of forage, sacks of grain,—
including wheat, oats, peas, corn, lice,
etc. Also potatces, sngar cane, and all
' the products of a well ordered farm.
THE GARDEN AND ORCHARD
received more than usual attention this
year, and was quite full and merito
rious. Here was marshaled the finest
of apples, pomegranates, pumpkins,
kershaws, watermelons, and all the
garden vegetables one could think of,
or read about in a catalogue. Here
were egg plants as large as your head,
whether you class yourself as “little
head, little wit,” or “big head, not a
bit.” Mr. S, H. Rumpb, of Willow
Lake Nursery, had a beautiful display
of fruits for tins season.—t imnoli u-e
from her-garden. There were several
other fine'displ ivs of vegetables.
THE POULTY SH OW
at our county fairs hasahvays been fine.
It kept pace at this one, and there were
several hundred fine fowls on exhibi
tion. We must here make special
mention of a pair of snow while Pekin
ducks—as large as geese- exhibited By
Mr. Chas. E. Campbell, of the firm of

HORSE DEWmiENT.
m, arf '
I here were fiveifine s tallions exhibi
ted* A fine thorough-bred by Mr. W.
C. Tiinberlake, of Macon, raised on
Mr. T.’s plantation in Virginia, a fine
Georgia-raised horse of Mr. Jno, Martin,
of this county, which was trained as
well as a. real circus horse, and wgltzed
beautifully to the music of the baud.
Also an elegant black horse owned by
Mr. M. L. Cooper; of Fort Valley.
Mr.'Jordan of Hawkinsville, won the
single harness premium on his brown
mare, and got the red ribbon on his
double team; Messrs. Day & Gordon
exhibited the prettiest team—a pair of
beautiful dark bays, just received by
them from Louisville, Ky. Capl. T.
M. Bntner and Mr. T. D. Gurr took tbe
premium on a fine pair of sorrels. The
display of brood mares and colts was
splendid. Mr. Alonzo Summerford, of
Dooly county, carried off the premium.
Mr. C. P. Brown of Hawkinsville, ex
hibited a' fine mare .and sucking colt
20 months old,. and tho colt was 15
hands high and he drives it beside its
mother in double harness. There were
several other splendid mares and colts,
two of each being exhibited by Mr. J.
G. Dayis.
Among the many fine cattle on exhi
bition Was a superb three year old bull
and six calves of the Brahmin stock,
which cannotbe beat in Georgia. They,
were shown by Mr. W. F. McGehet, of
this county, who raised them.
THE LADIES HJLL.
In the aoademv was presented a scene
of beauty that we have never seen sur
passed, indeed, never equalled. The
walls were lined with pictures, and the
large room filled with articles of ladies’
feandi work and home industry.
NEEDLEWORK, ETC.
occupied two long counters in the cen
ire of the hall and racks above ibem.
The articles were of the finest workman
ship and numbered hundreds.
We will specially mention the dis
plays made by Mrs. G, H. White and
Mrs. W. H. Norwood; which deserves
the highest praise for taste, skill and
indnst! y, .Miss Clara Bright exhibited iLe
most beautiful calico dress we ever saw,
and Miss Pauline Mann a lotof;eal
thread incewcik, that was pronounced
by competent judges eqnrl to the im
ported. Miss Liza Wbitehmsl took
the premium on a beautiful lace collar.
Mr. G. G. Potter mide a fine display
of Hon. ton Factory manufactures.
HOME —TDOSTRY,
Wa3 the finest display ever seen in
Houston County. It occupied a long
counter and three steps of shelving ex
tending the whole length of the hall.
It more than doubled last year’s fair,
and was most attractive end beauti.al.
Onr space gives out here, and we
preserve further comments until next
week, when we will try to do the sub
ject justice.
