A W Wilson, Missionary Secretary, addressed the Gbnferouce on -the subject Of missions, Sis address, . was one of great ability and interest,. .and was listened to with 'profound atr ,tendon. ^Dr. McFerrin then, -fiy appointment, addressed the Cbnferencs at length on ,the publishing interests of the denomi nation, His address was replete \irith •^humor and .pathos, and was in his own inimitable style, Dej represented the publishing house at Nashville as being jin a flourishing erudition, running-to .its full capacity, and was, with tl^e lib eral.subscriptions of the .bretinjen, ,in a .fair way to pay the deb£, raise the mortgage op it, apd greatly increase its (efficiency $nd usefulness. It urged the &u shun log of-the publishing interests of ME Church g:ng the support of that old and hon ored institution of learning. After the usnrl appointments, etc.. Mr. Elmore, of the Lutheran Churoh was inirodneed, The Board of Trustees of the Orphans Dome ar iUhcon made their report.— they represent a total of 52 children dnring the year. Thirty have been provided with goood homes, and twen ty-six are now injoharge. These resi lution weiei ropored and adopted. 1st. That the presiding Bishop be requested to re-a'ppoint j,tlie2’efficient- and indefatigable superintendent and agent, Rev LB Payne. 2ud That the members of the Con ference render the Agent all the assis tance in their power. 3id That thanks be ri turned to Dr. W F Dolt for rendering his professional servicer free of. charge, he having re fused all compensation. J W Cheatham, A MBrannon, W B Dill. Rt v B F Tliarpe, D D, of the Bap tist Church, was introduced. Rev R J Corley submitted tlie report on Temperance, which was adopted.— It urged the importance of abstinence from intoxicating liquors, and pledged 1he ministry aud church to use every effort to eradicate the evil of iutemper mice. The Committee on Education report ed Emory College in a flourishing con ditio' . • Wesleyan Ftmrie College is prosper- perons, having 225-pupils db catalogue .and 180 now in attendance. Thismoble old institution is giving free tuition to a number of ncrmiil - students and six of the last graduating class are now .leaching, * undrew Female Collegers gaining ground, having now about 100 pupils. The -report insists on the importance of educating young men for ; the min istry, and recommends Presiding El ders to take np collections for their as sistance. Four are now being educa ted at Oxford. The presidents and 'boards of trus tees were requested to present their re ports on the first day of the next Con ference, Messrs. jl/eSwain, Clark. Felder, Godfrey, 3/iGebee and others made s>)me remarks and the. report was adopted. Tlie Treasnrer of the Board ol Edu cation reported $959 33 collected this ;- e w, and $552 72 paid out to assist the Divinity students, JReport adopted. The President, Dr. Dinton, request ed Dr. Thnrpe to address the ('Confer ence on the subject of education. Dr; Tbarpe strongly favored edneation through the instrumentality of denomi national colleges, and suggested that ;the Methodises and Baptists unite Wesleyan Ferqale .College and Mercer University, and organise a normal school in connection with them, so *as to obtain the $6,000 appropriated by the last Legislature, i nd the Peabody fund devoted to a like purpose. Dis re marks were well received. Dr. Key stated that the subject was not new, but was_ being considered'by the Board of Trustees. It ccm- mended the supreme' importance of the scriptures and insisted on. its dis semination and study. Urged the pat ronage of the American Bible society, etc . Rev. J,’L. Lyon, agent of the Bi ble Society then addressed tfc§ Confer ence briefly and presented the abstract of the annual report. The Bishop ennorsed the report and made some impressive remarks thereon. The report was adopted by a rising vote. • Dr. Clark presented the report of the special committee on ChurohaExten sion, which was Adopted. It insisted on the importance ef- church .extension^ erecting new build ii-gs and helping build up weak and new churches. This has been done to some extent by the mission board. It advised the taking of initial steps in the premises. A letter from Rev James Harris, s superannuated preacher, was read. Rev Bolan H Snsnett, of East .Uacon Mission, applied for re-admission to the Conference. De was re-admitted. Dev W S Baker was continued on the supeap n uated list. The report of the ccmmittoe on de ceased {Teachers reported the death of Dobeit W Dixon, Armjnins Wright, and Lovick Pierce, dnring this year, ; and presented the memorials—adopted, A committee of seven was appointed to take steps to erect a suitable monu ment to tlie memory of Dev Dr, Pierce. ■ Dev Mr. (Smith, of the Mississippi Conference was introduced.. The report was. received andjjppyo- prietely recognized by the Conference. Rev R M Lockwood offered a resolu tion—devoting tlie -first Pridgy j# April next to a. day of fasting and prayer,-.— adoptedt - Also, That the Lord’s Dapper be celebrated the 1st night of the next Conference,—adopted. Also, that the 1st day of May next be*6sed as peculiarly the chib drens, and that it be devoted to them, —adopted 1 Also regret:ng deeply the affliction of brother M. E Rylander, a day delegate, who was stricken with paralysis last night, and who is now perhaps passing his last hour on earth. Rev S Anthony by request lead in special prayer for him;—adopted. Thanhs were returned for the bequest of $50 a year from the estate of W A Rawsop,- of Atlanta. The Statistical report was read.
