SELLING OCJT TO THE EAST
■ litical sentiment at the st-at of
ment, says "that Southern members of
Congress, aQjne after this fashion:
"Wo have* nothing to hope for from
the West financially or politically. The
fall elections demonstrate that the
is against as politically, but]even if
•wero not, i here is no capital
■country to help build up and develop
South. All the capital is'tn the Fast;
South needs capital, and we propose to
support the financial views of ike section
that owns the capital"
We cannot believe that any consider
able. number of Southern Congressmen
“argue aft?r this fashion.” Possibly
dno or two disappointed and despairing
Southern men, who see nothing hut
gloom in the political future, may talk
in That way in tiu-ir moments of de
spondency. But that niiy such a “South
ciu'sentiment” prevails, or that “this is
the leaven that is working now” upon
the Southern mind, as the Star asserts,
v e do not and cai not bofieve.-
Lopking at the matter, only in a mer-
C'nary lignt. wBen liavo the Republi
cans of the East (or Democrats either)
manifested a disposition to help the
South with tlieir capital, except where
they perceive a chance to make a better
investment here than elsewhere for
-themselves? That is nut the habit of
men of capital, especially with the cup
ital acquired by the gambling methods
so prevalent among the business men of
the East now. The profit oi the veu-
’ ture is all that they consider in making
their investments, and neither patriotic
nor party considerations have any in
fluence. If subserving to the viows of
Eastern politicians could have secured
for the South the favor of that section
—could have prevailed on its capitalists
to scatter their millions of money broad
cast over the South—we have already
afforded tbeiu several excellent oppor
tunities. . All the Democratic Presiden
tial nominations since the war have
Iteen those of Eastern men fully comr
mitteil to the “financial; views”, of that
Bcctfon. The Democrats of the South
supported all these nominations hearti
ly, giving them the strongest support
military dictation would allow in 18G8,
a nearly "solid” support in 1872. and
An entirely solid support in 187G, and
yet this subserviency to Eastern. finan
cial views did not- purchase for us the
favor cf the capitalists of that sec-
&P«te In one of these instances we snf-
.KV-Jered a life long lvpublican and con
spicuous opponentof tlieSouth through
out his political career, but not a do llar
of Northern capital sent to the South
, (jould be traced to a recognition of this
;act of party and sectional abnegation.
As one of our Southern exchanges, no
ticing the article of the Star, well says:
'•‘The idea that any pecuniary advantage
pan come to Un* South from our sup
porting measures in Congress is laugha
ble. We can get money by working for
it, and net otherwise—all the laws.tbat
can be put on the statute books will not
add q dollar to any Southern pocket;
nor will any action theiSoiith may take
induce the Northern capitalists to in
vest tlieir money in (he South. They
will do that when they can make more
money hare than at the North and-not
before.”
The true policy of the Democrats of
iho South, in this as in all other po
litical erenorgsuoies, is to stand up for
principle and constitutional right and
d'^ky. They can purchase nothing hut
contempt by selling tlieir political
rights to tho capitalists of any section. 1
they can better endure defeat if sustain
ed in n manly endeavor to mainlaiu their
liberties and political. equality in the
union, than by surrendering their con

money power of any part of the couc-
