THUKSDaF evening, apsil
how WATCHES ABE MADE.
It will be Apparent to any one, who
will examine a Solid Gold Watch,
that aside fiom the necessary thickness
for engraving and polishing, a large
proportion of the precious metal used
is needed only to stiffen and hold the
engraved portions in place, and supply
the neceessary solidity and strength.
The Surplus gold is actually needless
so far as utility atid beauty are con
cerned. In James Boss’ Patent Gcld
Watch Cases, this waste of precious
metal is overcome, and the same solid
ity and strength produced at from one-
third t j one halt of the usual cost of
solid, cases. This process is of the most
simple Bature, as follows; a plate of
l-.ickle composition metal, especially
adapted to the purpose, his two plates
of solid gold soldered one on each
side. The three are then passed be
tween polished steel rolers, and the re
sult is a strip of heavy plated compo
sition, from which the cases, backs,
centres, bevels, &c., are cut and shaped
by suitable dies and formers. The
gold in these cases is sufficiently thick
to. admit -c^all kinds of chasing, engra
ving and enamelling; the engraved ca
ses have been oarrried until worn per
fectly smooth by time and use without
removing the gold.
THIS IS THE ONLY CASE MADE WITH
TWO PLATES OP SOLID GOLD AND WARRAN
TED BY SPECIAL CERTIFICATE.

THE LIBRARY ENTERTAIN
MENT-
Never was an audience more delight
ed with an entertainment than Monday
night at Paul’s Hall. The object was for
the benefit of the Public library, and
although the attendance was not os
large os the merits of the entertainment
cause deserved, it was both
critical and appreciative. We cannot
speak too highly of the cultivated and
excellent music given on the occasion;
and at the same time, when- all did so
well, we shall not stultify ourself by
making distinctions, as wo always did
dislike partiality.

Tlio ladies and gentlemen of the li
brary propose to have frequent enter
tain meats during the year in the library
hall. The exercises will always be so
varied as to give the audiences the
greatest amount of intellectual enter
tainment and enjoyment possible. The
objects of the Reading .Club aud Libra
ry are to culiivate.and encourage the
musical and intellectual tastes of oar
people, and to develop their sociability
and good feeling; and the enterprise
should be encouraged, and not retarded
by personal prejudices and animosi
ties. '
The charges for these entertainmen's
have been fixed, except for extraordina
ry occasions at the very low price of 25
cents, just half the price of a third rate
slight of hand show. Surely the honscs
ought always to be crowded. It isintend-
ed to give all who are unselfish enough
to work for the hbrarv a chance to con
tribute to these entertainment* accord

trusted to them

Capt. John C Rutherford, of Macon,
has kindly consented to deliver his cele
brated lecture on “Paris” for the bene
fit of the Perry Public Library on the
evening of Wednesday, the 24th ins+.
This lecture has been delivered at many
of (he most v refined and intellectual
points of Georgia, and has been every
where most highly appreciated. It is
jnst such a lecture as our people will
appreciate and prlronize for irs own
merits, bnt when the object is benevo
lent and it is kuown that Capt R. wants
no individual benefit, but pnrposes to
contribute his services for the help of
the library,everybody ought to patronize
it, and that liberally. Let us give Capt
R. a crowded house—at least five hun
dred hearers.

and satisfactory report* by the Secreta
ry and treasurer, tnc board of managers
submitted the following report, which
was received and adopted, with thanks:
To the Perry Rending Club and Li
brary Association:
The board of managers for the year,
ending March 26,1880, beg leave to
submit the following report of the con
dition and management of the Library
fpr said year, as required byjthe consti
tution. * The Board was elected on j the
13th day of April; 1879,
The Library Hall had previously
been rented, prepared; and famished
under committees appointed by the As
sociation and considerable donations
end deposits : of books; pictures and
other articles of use and ornament had
been generously made by the survivors
of the Hoastori Literary’ Association
and the friends of the Library.
We at once organized by the appoint
ment of the several standing commit
tees the election of a Librarian aud the
adoption of appropriate rules for the
government offthe board and the regu
lations of the Library as required by
the constitution.
On April 15, 1879 tb e Library was
opened to the public and has been kept
open ever since, Prt vidential iiiterpo-
t-ion excepted, at a stated hour fixed by
the Board. An account of receipts aud
disbursement has been laid before you by
the Secretary and Treasurer. It will
thus be seen that our resources have
not been great and our expenditures
necessarily ^restricted by the closest
economy.
We report with just pride* however,
that the expenses are paid and inebted-
ness nothing, and we have $500 wrrth
of property and a cash balance on
band.
Our extraordinaiy resources for rais
ing money by lectures, entertainments,
&c., haye been limited during the year,
by the efforts of the churches which di
verted public patronage to objects
whose priority, we admit; became of
of their exigencies.
These exigences having been satisfied,
wo trust that the coming year will fit
ness a revival of interest- and increased
revenue to the Library from schemes
which appeal to public pationago.
The shelves coutuiu 900 volumes,
most of them v.du ible books —average
number of books taken per mouth is
100, average number of members dor -
ing the year 112.
We herewith present a schedule c>f
properly owned by the association, on
which we have a policy “ of insuran ce iu
the Georgia Home Co. for §250, which
we rt commend to be increased to $500
at its ixpiraMon, April 12, 1S80.
The association ul its regular meeting
on the 4tli Friday evening in February
last authoriz' d the Board to purchase a
piano for the Library.
We hade o dered i.n ex-e lent plat o
through Mr. E>lwin Martin at the prne
of $25U $30 of which Mr. Martin gei e -
ourly donated $50 to the Library, and
$50 payable without lien or interest
next fail—leaving;$130 to be paid when
piano arrives.
The action of the Association and
Board was unanimous and we think
wise.
Willi a piano in our hall we will be
enabled to hold the meetings of the
Reading Club" there and thus enhance
their interest aud popularity.
Wo will also have fcfc all times the
chief instrument,'heretofOlre and other
wise unobtainable for public entertain
ments, given for the benefit of the Li
brary.
The Board and Association are much
indented to airs. John G. Davis for her
zeal aud ability exerted" in schemes for
increasing our revenue, to Edwin Mar
tin for grutnous advertising and encour-
ing notices of the Library in The Home
Journal, and to Mr. C. E. Gilbert.
Secretary, and Mr.' F. S. Cater, Treas
urer, for fidelity and efficiency in dis
charging ratheronerous duties without
pay.
We likewise commend the zeal and
faithfulness of onr Librarian,Mrs. Lucia
King.
In conclusion we' earnestly appeal to
the Association to r. r .lly\with renewi d
zeal to the eattse of the Library.
Onr town is already noted for it* hos
pitality, its moral and religions influen
ces, its social refinement, it* charitable
and benevolent organizetions aud the
good order of its citizens, aud we hope ere
long will regain its old pre-eminence as
an educational centre.
Let ns cherish nil these, and add to
them the important auxiliary of a well
sustained and a well kept public libra
ry, and while our tawn may not s ion be-
come.a business centre, it will steadily
increase in solid prosperity.
• The annual dnes, $2 tor m iles and
$1 females place the membership in the
reach of all, and we should have at least
S00 names on onr register. This would
give ns an annual ordinary income of
$450, which af’er paying running ex
penses would leave $230 per annnrn for
die Durcbase of books and periodicals, |
which, with other source* of revenue
and donations would, in a few year,
dive, us a’spleudid library—the pride of j
our people.
