Comments thereon. As a citizen of
Houston county, we are perfectly wil-
ling to advocate her choice, and when
her convention designates the man who
Houston dtsires to be the next govern^
or of Georgia . then will we espouse his
cause and do our utmost to secure his
nomination bv the state convention.
Failing' in this, we will hss our, best

the State convention which, is to meet
isr. Atlanta on the 4th of August next.
In the meantime we will keep onr own
counsel aiicl.ajlow the tiiehds of the sev-
Crr.l’candidi.tes to advocate the cause of
each.
Tlieie are now four names promi
nently mentioned as candidates foy gov

that the section of the state in which he
resides is one of the prune arguments
used in advocating eiich of these candi
dates for the position.
Gen. X, J. Gartrell, of Atlanta, is
what might be termed the candidate of
North Georgia.

Hon. JRufus E. Lester, of Savannah,
has a host of friends and admirers in
South and Southeast. Georgia, aud by
them he is presented as a man eminent*
ly lilted to occupy the gubernatorial
chair of oiir'sfate.
Gov. Colquitt has a, strong--following
of personal" friends and admirers
throughout the state! who demand his
re-elcefion on the seore that his record
has been attacked, and he mint
be vindicated. He is the candidate ef
no' cspdcial section.

We bold that no man' has a claim
upon any-office in the stale, save when
it ife awarded through the ballots of
the people, and that the section in
which lie lives should not add one iota
to his strength as a cand idate. The
state of Georgia wants a governor’for
the entire' state, and not for'any spe
cial section thereof.
The four men we have mentioned are
known throughout .the state, and their
qualities are such as will render a choit-e
between them au exceeding difficult and
delicate undertaking.- Oar honest
opinion, from the present oiit-look, is
that neither of them will be nominated,

The Conyers Comet Band kindly fur

and appropriate speech, extending to it
the freedom of the city, and Dr, David
E. Buller, of the Christian Index, made
one of Ins hu morons and characteristic
responses. Judge Arthur Hood ad*

faculties and pupils of the {touth Gedr-

of high order, and of which Cutbbort is
justly proud. The citizens opened
tbeir dodrs, and- entertained the scrib*

Communicated —
During ctlr .superior court quite a
number of citizt-ns of Houston county
united' iu a petition to the above naiu*

eanduhite for governor of Georgia.
Hud the petition been geiierally circu
lated. we doubt not it would have re
ceived the eiguatnfes of a large majority
of our people. Four years ago Col. B.
had a. strong support iu this county,
and bis noble conduct in the last cam
paign, and since, has won him scores-
of new ! frierds, who will be true ami
earnest in- the advocacy of his clainss.-
We are-satisfied that many of his dp-"
pom ntt would liave then supported
him bad-they properly kno vn his true
merits, aud appreciated his claims up
on the state and our county in partieu*
Jar. Gov. Colquitt has rightly received
hi* reward—the highest office in the
gift of the people of Georgia. We be
lieve him to be a good and pure man,
but do not think be possesses the abili
ty-and flrmues-3 to guarantee his reten-
teution in that position by the people,
who have honored him and employed
him to watch over the interests of th^
commonwealth. Col. Hardeman is now
eminently the mail for the place, and
we hope midtile Georgia will unite as
. one man in his support,

wings of one ,of-them- caught fire, from a

though several men did their utmost to
extinguish the.fire. By the coolness of
one of the actors, the audience was pre
vented from indulging iu a frightful
stampede from the dtoiise. No other
damage was done beyond the painful
burning of several of the actresses, who
were amateurs. Mrs. Adelaide Ham

of. her burns, which were rendered
