DEATH.
Rc-bert Morgan, infant son of Mr.
and Mrs. T. W. Smith,departed this life
on the evening of Saturday, the 4th.
inst.. aged 9 mouths aud 23 days.
While we know that he is but transla
ted from this world of sorrow aud care
to that sphere above, where he will ever
rest close to the bosom of Him wbo i.-;
more gentle even than father or mother,
still it is but natural that bis parents,
bis brother and his sisters should mourn
his departure. While we may not hope
to console them, we may yet offer our
heartfelt sympathy, and point them to
tbe One who alone is able to comfort
them, and who has said.- “Suffer little
children to come unto me.”
A Friend.
Irajirovctl Cotton.
We saw on the street last Monday an
exceedingly prolific stalk of cotton from
tho plant ition of Dr. RJ. \V. Havis.uear
Perry. It is not a very large st ilk, not
more than 21 feet high, but contained
more than 60 grown bolls, besides al
most all equal number of squares aud
blooms. Ou one srixn we counted 11
grown bolls aud several blooms within
the space of 12 inches, and on several
stems wc noticed two bolls on one joint.
This cotton is the result of an experi
ment that Dr, Havis has been trying
during the past five years. • He first
took seeds of the genuine Hurloug Pro
lific cott-ou aud mixed with an equal
amount of seeds of the old-fashion Red
Stem. He planted these mixed seed,
and each year since eon tinned to select
tho best proceeds. Hence came a most
prolific “Havis” cotton.

There is some rumor of a repablica
organization in Houston county for tho
puapose of placing candidates in the
field for couuty offices. We do not lul-
ly credit the rumor, but that we hear it
is sufficient cause to induce the demo
crats of the county to band together for
the purpose of defostingauy such move
ment, In county matters we must have
no bickering and strife, but fi t the nom
ination close the contest as bet ween
democrats, and then all woik together
for the election of the nominees.:- In no
other way is success assured to us.
Mr. A. K. Fisher has now in process
of completion at Wellborn’s ferry,twen
ty-five miles above Hawkinsville, n boat
one hundred feet in length, with a ca
pacity for carrying four hundred
fifty bales of cotton. JW° r k was com
menced upon tho boat in tho early part
of the summer, but we have said noth
ing about it, because we wanted to see
whether the enterprise would prove n
success. • There is no longer any doubt
about it, and the boat will be ready for
tho river in a few weeks. When loaded
it will 'draw.t'u-oe feet of water, and fif
teen inches without a eargtf.-rBdiekiiis-
