—A negro man living near Hender
son left home last Friday with fourteen
frying-size chickens^ expecting to sell
them in Ferry. He also brought with
him several bundles of oats with which
to feed bis mhle. The oats and chick-
been shot, giving no particulars. The
news found incredulous hearers at first,
but when its correctness was vouched
for. all hearers expressed much sorrow
that the dead had been done, and great
indignation against the would-be as
sassin. Later in the evening the news
came that President Garfield was dead,
and then it was felt that a great calam
ity had fallen upon the country. Sun
day morning’s papers dispelled this
sorrow somewhat by the news that Gar
field was not dead.
Since Sunday and up to yesterday
morning, the news received from Wash
ington told ns that the condition of the
President continued hopeful, with
slight variations. He was resting. well
yesterday morning, retained the nour
ishment given him, and strong hopes of
his recovery are entertained.
The crime was committed at the
Washington tk pot of the Baltimore &
Piotomac Railroad, just as the Presi
dent and his party were about to em
bark - for New York. The would-be
assassin is one Charles Guilteau, of
Chicago, wliostyles himsalf a lawyer, a'
politician and a theologian, asserts that
he is- ; a-stillwart_of the stalwarts, and
that the. death of Garfield was necessa-
sv to unite the republican party. Two
shots were fired, one e'ntering just above
the right Lip, and passing through the
lower lobe of the liver, ana lodging in
that vicinity. This ball has not been
extracted. The other ball passed
through the fleshy part of the right
arm.

A dastardly blow has been struck at
our form of government, and should
President Garfield die, and Arthur be
came President, it-is not so sure that a
r idic tl change will not take place. The
thought that forces itself upon the
mind at this supreme moment is the
question, who will profit by Garfield’s
death? The only answer throws a
damning cloud around the political
shoulders of CoDkling and his satelites.
We do n**t presume.to say that Conk-

and such deplorable need for reuniting

the recovery of President.Garfield, .and

Fort Valley Notes,
Editor Home Journal:—
The examinations of the different
schools of the town have passed. Mrs,

last. Mrs. Austin. Tney all. did- well.
The teachers give evidence that they
are capable of imparting instruction to
the children iu all they claim to teach.
There is nothing to prevent this from
being a school centre.' If every one in
terested would put their shoulders to
the wheel, Fort Valley would soon be
known far and near as a place at wbich

' 'come. Nothing adds so -much to the
prosperity of a town as good schools.
There was a time when the people of
the Sooth had money, and conld make
that take the place of education, in
part, at least. But now the boy that

look otherwise before they went.

Our town is no exception to others,
