sion. Some of "them seemed to
think that the tendency* of . such
schools is * to hnakre ' engineers
rather than mechanics, and that it
would be better to keep the pupilfe
more 'strictly- to mechanical work.
There is no doubt about this ten
dency. -The’ambition of teachers
to mafee a great show of results in
cites them’io the extravagant use
of-power tocfls and to an extension
of the course of study until it em
braces all the textbooks in the sci
entific course '-of *a college. But
while this is going orr the shop-
work with hand tools is necessarily
neglected. We have plenty of
colleges now for making'engiiieers
by the books. These Might. be
improved, perhaps, by adding
shop practice.. But we also need
mechanical schools pure and sim
ple, where the work shall be done
by hand and where all, of very
nearly all, of the. time of a pupil
shall be given to the bench. The
higher studies of an engineer
would, no doubt, be useful to the
young Mechanic, but schemes of
education have to be adapted to
the necessities of the pupils, and
it is not practicable to give a col
lege education to boys who are ex
pected to become machinists and
whose time will be abundantly oc
cupied in tMSpiay of mechanical
drawing and the use of hand
tools.

* fixickleji’s Atnie* Salve-
I am a Coppersmith by trade, ahd
during a senes of years my arms
(being bare when at work) have
absorbed a wonderful afBiouht of
metal poison.Having a scrofulous
tendency from my youth, the small
particles of copper aucl brass would
get into the sores, and by this pro
cess the poison was conveyed into
my blood till my whole system be
j'-eame infected. I was treated with
! the old remedies of mercury and
iodide pottasium. Salivation, fol
lowed, my teeth are all loose in my
head, my digestive organs derang'd
and I been helpless in bed for over
a year with mercurial rheumatism.
My joints were all swollen, and I
lost the use of my arms and legs,
and became helpless as an infant.
My sufferings became so intense
that it was impossible for me to
rest. Tihe doctors advised rae to
go to the city hospital for treat
ment. This I could not bear. A
friend, who has proved a friend in
deed, urged me to try Swift’s Spe
cific, believing it would cure me.
Others discouraged me, but I se
cured a few bottles, and have now
taken two dozen bottles. The first
effect of the medicine was to bring
the poisOh to the surface, and I
broke out all over in running sores.
They soon disappeared, and my
skin cleared off. My knees, which
had become twice ’ their natural
size, have resumed their usual
size, and are supple as "of yore.
My hands and arms are all right
again, and can use them without
pain. The entire disease has. left
all parts of the body save two ul
cers on my wrists, which are heal
ing rapidly. I am weak from
long confinement, but have the use
of all my limbs; This medicine
is bringing me ofit of the greatest
trial-of my life, and I cannot find
words sufficient to-express my ap
preciation of its virtues, and the
gratitude I feel that I ever beard
of it. Peter E. Love,;
