Schilling, parents of Mrs. Hen dricks. —The tax rate of Houston county for 1885 will be determined by our County Commissioners on the first Monday in August next. It should certainly be lower than the rate levied last year, —We.are informed that several citizens of Perry will attend the examination and exhibition at Thomson’s Academy on the 17th inst, Friday of next week. The editor hopes to be on hand. —At a meeting of the Board of Diretitors last Monday, Rev. G. T; Stansbury was unanimously elect ed President of the Houston Male school, to be rendy to take-in hoard ers, of whom we understand there will be a, large increase Aver last term. Last Friday afternoon there happened in our town a negro and and white tramp. The white man walked on until he got out of town, while the negro stopped and tried to sell two watches—one gold and the other silver—which he had in his possession. Owing to the low prices at which he offered them, suspicion was aroused that they were stolen property, and therefore they were taken frdm. him. He pleaded for time to catch his comrade and prove property, which was granted him, and lie has neve! been seen since. So we have two watches aWaithig the owner to call for them. iAbms. . Plenty rain has fallen in this section to guarantee a fine yield for all corn planted early. No better prospect for a good coin crop was ever seen before. The Cotton crop, where it has been well cultivated, looks fine, 'file Water melon prospect is quite bright here now. Most of the farmers around here planted' the variety known, as the “Montfort Jumbo,” which is said to be the most sale able melon in the Atlanta market. SICKNESS AND DEATH; Mrs. Carter, an ekcellAnc bid lady of our town, died last Tuesday at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. Tom Lowe, of typhoid dysentery. She had bebh a 'member of the Methodist Church for many years; and was loved by ail who knew her. Mr. C. D. Peavy, wild libs re cently moved from Macon here; was sick last week, but has since recovered. Your humble correspondent has been sick for eight days with bil ious fever, and is just now able to sit up. YEBSONALS. Gn motiofi adjourned to the 1st Monday in August next. D. H. Culler, 0. & C. Death of Mrs. Moreland'. At, one. o’clock last Friday morning Mrs. Mary 0. Moreland died at the residence of lier son-in- lan, Col. A. A. Dozier, in Colum bus. The remains reached Perry Friday night, and the interment took place in the family burial ground at Hayneville Saturday af- ternboji. She was about 55 or 56 yeaiis old, and leaves four children,many relatives anda host of friends to mourh her loss. For many years she lived at Hayneville, Houston county, and was held iii high es teem by all who knew her. Her daily life proclaimed her a chris- taffi, she being a consistent mem ber of the Methodist cliurch. A good woman has gone to her reward.
