this route, might think me offi

but deep, upon my devoted head,
if I ventured so far- So, to avoid
this dire possibility, I tvill confine
mvseif to the matter in baud,
Prof. Kellogg’s examination and
things pertaining thereto.
I had never seen it, but through
the'eolumns of your paper had
learned that the school house at
Henderson was a pretty piece of
tnodem architecture, and that its
furniture was in keeping with the
building, ment to insure the bodi
ly comfort of the scholars, while
tlieiaarniuds are being developed
and furnished. I need not attempt
a description of these—the build-
ingafid. the furniture. It is suffi
cient,to say that they have been
procured at an outlay of between
two and three thousand dollars.
When one remembers that Hen
derson is a small country village,
where not a dozen families reside,
and that the adjacent country is
sparsely settled by men of small
means, the facts that I have stated
convince him that they are an en-
telligent and liberal people.
lihey beautify their homes, and
cultivate the graces of social life,
whileihey show an enterprising
public sdirit. But to the examina
tion. To commence at the begin
ning^-the first class called rose in
its place, each member standing
where he rose, until the Prof, gave
the command “pass,” when with
military precision, the class pass
ed to the rostrum, and at once sat
together. It was a class of little
fellows. They spelled with pre
cision, and told us all about the
different Muds of letters, mutes,
labials, ‘and vowels, and showed ns
how they controlled the pronunci
ation of Words, and entered, one or
more, into the construction of ev
ery ofWord. They read without
hesitation, and with connect inflec
tion and emphasis. Then came
classes in Geography, Arithmetic
and Grammar, each in its order,
• and each taking its- place with the
same selcrity and noiselessness as
the first. They told us something
of eveiy known country on the
glofie; knew all about latitude and
longitude; took ns along with
thein'from numeration to mensur
ation, giving us a reason for every
step they took, analyzing and ex-
plaifemg, and,- as far as they went,
showing a fine comprehension of
that* useful and difficult science,
some knowledge of which every
man must possess, but the depth
of whose mysteries no man has
yet’sounded. And Grammar—
they knew this too: defined the
parts of speech, gave us rules, and
declensions, and conjugations,
wrote out sentences upon the
black-board, separated them into
their parts; pointed out subjects,
and : predicates, and showed the
qualifying words and clauses of
eadh: Analysis! Analysis! Wheth
er un Grammar or Mathematics,
the 1 Prof., relentlessly demanded*
ltt, and the scholars quickly and
accurately rendered it Next
came classes in the higher mathe
matics, who manifested the same
proficiency and thoroughness of
instruction; and last- in order came
classes. in the dead languages,
Latin fape^ Greek. Of these, I
mdst speak modestly, for after an
absence: of twenty-five y ears from
the- School room, I found that

I saw the pupils read Caesar

of his ancestry for two generations

In Prof. Kellogg the trustees of
the Henderson school have se
cured one of the best educators of
the day. He he has held high po
sitions in the schools of Virginia,
Tennessee, and elsewhere, and with
the united and cordial support of
trustees and patrons, which 1 am.
sure lie will have, will give their
school a reputation of which they
will be proud.
Perhaps, Mr, Editor, I have al
ready trespassed on your columns,
and the patience^ of your readers
too long; but allow me to make
brief mention of the dinner spread
in the grove near the academy for
the refreshment of the school and
visitors. It was a rich feast, ele
gantly served—equal to the best I
have ever seen spread on similar
occasions, and I have seen many
good ones. It was not only excel
lent in quality and variety, but
when all were fed enough was left
to feed twelve times as many more.
Our hosts and hostesses vied with
each other in their attentions to
the crowd, and, while all enjoyed
the feast of fat things, the genuine
heartiness and grace of manner
with which this hospitality was
dispensed, made one feel that “it
is more blessed to give than to re
ceive.”
May the good people of Hender
son realize their brightest hopes
concerning their school. With its
help their sons and daughters will
grow up around them polished
and fitted to go forth into the oc
cupations of life, 'the pride and
comfort of their declining years,
and a blessing to their names and
memory when they are no more.
