so uncomplainingly all the day,
ought to be duly considered and
provided for. But is also a matter
of dollars and cents. In cold

windy or damp, nature Uses the

required for the animated stove of
a mule, hoise or cow.
The subject of proper housing
of live-stock is one that is well Un

Warm, dry quarters. In our stlnny
land we are apt to rely too touch
on oar mild winters, and hundreds
of stables and shelters are little
better than out of dooto.
This was likewise declined, as were
several others -all of which had
been offered at a very small mar
gin of profit. The merchant, who
by the way knows how to diite a
bargain as well as his neighbors,
finally -decided in his despair at
not effecting a sale, to resort to
the credit dodge in hope of accom
plishing tlie result desired, and to
this end selected from his stock a
coat which cost $1.65, and. which
he Would have willingly taken
“cost” for. This he offered to the
intelligent and honest black phil
osopher for ten dollars, agreeing
to charge two of it and accept the
remaining eight dollars cash.
The coon bit at the offer with the
alacrity of a catfish swallowing a
worm, and without examining the
coat or even trying it on, he took
it and went on his way rejoicing,
elated with the idea of having got
it partly on a credit. The mer
chant is rather indifferent about
the payment of the two dollar bal
ance which was charged.

In the autumn of 1830 a. travel*

became a successful publisher and
the head of a firm whose name i&
well known in the United States

cabin on a farm in Eastern Illi

a night’s lodging. There Was no

stretched on the grass reading a
book. “He’ll do/’ said the stran

Keep Busy.
Try to keep busy. Leisure leads
to idleness, idleness to bad associ
ations, bad associations to drunk
enness, and drunkenness to shame
and disgrace. Have nerve, have
pride, have firmness, have a will
to halt, and you are armed against
the worst of vices. No man ever
drowned trouble and sorrow in the
bowl, but many have made moun
tains of sorrow out of small hills
of trouble. If your hand should
get burnt, putting it in the fire will
not cure it. Remember this world
is not a world of sunshine. There
are days of sorrow for every one-
Gloomy thoughts come to all. Men
were not created to sip the pleas,
ures of life like the gaudy winged
butterfly sips the summer flower,
and then perish and die at the first
cold, Withering touch of winter.
Man was created for a... purpose.
He is happiest who makes others
happy. Give courage to those
around you by being brave your
self and there will be more sun
shine than shadows for you.
The leading issue in the Senato
rial contest in New York is, strange
to say, the oleomargarine bill.
Senator Miller did as much as any
man to have the bill passed, and
he wants the dairy interest to sup
port him for the Senate again for
his advocacy of it. The friends of
other candidates say that it doesn’t
help the dairymen as much as they
expected it would, and hence, they
ought not not to feel bound to sup-
yort Senator Miller. The Sena
tor’s chief opponent is Levi P.
Morton, who has several millions
which may in the end be more po
tent to the rural members tiian
