Whims of Noted Men.
Marietta Journal.
It is claimed that the chances
are largely against mon§y=inaking
by tilling the soil under the pres
ent order of things. As a matter
of fact, the larger n limber of those
who are ^trying it are falling far
ther and farther back every year.
But we hear now anti thon of one
who is making farming a decided
success, who is improving his con
dition at a rapid rate. Ever and
anon, it is reported through the
papers that this or that farmer
has been blessed with a large yield
as the result of well directed ef
forts, and then we learn occasion
ally that the hireling of a few
years ago is the hirer of many la
borers.
These instants prove that it is
not impossible to make money
with free labor, and cotton at low
figures. With skill and economy
and energy the thing may be done.
The question presents itself f VV hy
is it done by so few?
In the cases that prosper, it is
not discernible that there are any
exception xl advantages in their
favor. They do not find richer
lands, f*r setfftrd more efficient la
bor. They do not possess any
power of attracting the clouds to
dispense showers upon their fields.
In all those particulars they are
neither more nor less favored than
others. The difference lies chiefly
in the faith and the wilL
A great many of our ys>ung men
who engage in farming start out
with the conviction on their minds
that they are going to fail, and, as
a matter of course, they do fail.
They go at it in a faint-hearted,
loose-handed Wffiy, that makes suc
cess almost an impossibility. They
have no faith in themselves, and
Uo one as any in them. Few of
them have money, and quits as
few inspire the confidence which
renders capitalists willing to risk
advances. There neve'r' was a
time when a young man who
evinces determination, energy and
shrewdness could command larger
or readier credit than now> Some
who have little save these qualities
to pledge are procuring loans
Which,with judicious management,
may make them masters of inde
pendent fortunes. Why cannot
many do so? Simply, as w# think,
because our young" men are dis
trustful of themselves. Had they
inore faith in their own abilities,
they would be more aStfr in enter
prises, and this would beget a
stronger confidence on the part of
others in their fttturu.
The Supreme Court of Arkansas
has decided that a Second Advent^
ist must observe Sunday, evSii
though he also observe Saturday
as Sunday. This makes Arkansas
more rigid in this respect than
Massachusetts, which allows any
one within its borders to perform
secular business on Sunday, that
will disturb «d> on# else, provided
lie observes Saturday a§ Sunday,
conscientiously believing it to be
the proper day of rest.
An English journal says that
the consumption of paper and the
volume of its manufacture are
sometimes taken as standards of
civilization, and, stiangely regard
less of the conclusions Which its
readers are likely to draw, publish

different countries. By this enu
meration the United States stands
first, having the greatest number
of mills, Germany second, France
third and England fourth.
A new craze has taken posses
sion of the erratic city of Chicago.
The men are preparing -to adopt
the fashion of their forefathers
and wear knee breeches The
erase is supposed to have been
originated in the interest of the
Southern cotton plaster's. Chicago
calves will need padding, and the
consequent demand for cotton will
cause the price to rise,

Great men have whims as Well
as small ones, and public person
ages are frequently very queer
upon some particular thing. Prob
ably ex-Attorney General Brew
ster had the strangest conceit of
any man who. eve? came to Wash
ington. -He liked an open^grUtfe
fire, but somehow he detested the
color of coal. The contrast' of the
black coal and the red and blue
flames was most distasteful to him;
so his servant always had orders
to splash the fuel liberally with
whitewash, which he kept on hand
for that purpose. Ben Butler has
a whim. Of late years he is sel
dom without a piece of slippery
elm in his mouth, which he de
clares is an admirable specific for
nervousness. Tears ago Butler
was a smoker. Then hu took what
is called a dry smoke, that is, he
went through the -motions of
smoking, with an tlnlighted - cigar
in his mouth. From that he lias
graduated to slippery elm. There
are several members of congress
who have what is known as the
crack-walking craze. Not one of
these men would step upon a crack
in a day’s walk unless obliged to
do so by the|presence of a brick
sidewalk- There is a certain sci
entific man here whose name is
known all over the civilized world.
He says: “I have had this crack-
walking habit for twenty years.
In the first place I started just for
fun to see if I could avoid step
ping on a crack in going a certain
distance. I found that I could,
and I made up my mind to keep it
up bn that day. As I had a cer
tain amount of walking to do, at
first this craze was a sort of pleas
ant diversion. Then it became a
settled habit. I have tried to
break it up time and tiipe again,
but it has such a hold upon me
that I presume I shall remain a
crack-walker to the end of my
days.”

One Tiling Lacking
Cel. F. B. Stockbridge, who has
just been elected United States
Sen&tor in Michigan, has one of
the finest private residences in the
West. He is rather a hale and
hearty man himself, and doesn’t
c&re much for the fashionable or
the luxurious. However, just to
please the home folks, he spent a
cool §100,000 on the Kalamazoo
mansion. Shortly after the com
pletion of this splendid edifice he
invited one of his old friends, a
Michigan horseman, to inspect
the premises. After looking at all
the fine things this friend said:
“Wa'all, Frank, you’ve got a
mighty fine house here, and I
reekoh there’s nothing more you
want.”
“Tes,” answered Stockbridge, “I
suppbse ’tis very reclierchy, but
there’s one thing that’s lackin’.”
“ghat’s that?” asked the visi
tor.
“A parrot,” said Stockbridge.
“A parrot!” cried the visitor.
“Now, what on airth do you want
of a pafrot, Frank?”
‘Td like to have him set right
up over the front door,” said
Stockbridge, “so that every. time
he saw me he’d flop hip wings and
