It is worthy of §|fe that the
railway system of New England
seems to be complete! No new
railroads were constructed last
year in the states of Yermont,
Rhode Island and Connecticut, and
in the others hut forty-one miles.
While this is true; of New Eng
land, it is far from being true of
the. South. In nearly every South
ern state there is a remarkable ae-
was howling outside, and the ther--
mometer 10 degs. below zero, when
he said to his wife as he tucked
the bed clothes around him:

when we laboring men are forced

a mind to join’em for the sake of
the great principle involved, if for
no other reasen.” •

Many new lifr.es of very great im

This is especially tr ue of Geor
gia, Tennessee, Alabama and Tex
as. The outlook is that of the
12,000 miles which Poor’s IVIanual
estimates will be constructed this
year, at least half will be fa these
four states. A large number of
railroads have been chartered that
will' never be constructed, but they
are of comparatively little import
ance. The policy has. been to
grant charters whenever fcb'ey/ have
been asked, and this has led to the
formation . of many railroad
schemes of questionable value.
But such schemes will hot i n any
way interfere with the construction
of important lines.
It has frequently been said that
the best e vidence of progress is- ac
tivity in railroad construction.
This is certainly true in the South.
The lines under construction’ have
a reason- for their existence- The
increased activity in- industrial
pursuits, and especially in.mining
and manufacturing, has caused- a
demand for better railroad facili
ties. Then, in turn, the new Sues
will stimulate trade and mining
and manufacturing, so that there
will be a union of forces helping
the South onward and upward.
There is_no reason to doubt that
the star of empire has indeed turn
ed toward the South.

Spiders give the telegraph- com

trouble. They spin their webs
between the earth, the wires-, the
posts, the insulators and the trees.
When these webs become wet with

ductor, and the lines are found to
be in connection with the earth.
The only method of obviating this
inconvenience is by employing
brooms of'bamboo to brush away
the webs.

No man has been brought before

He is at the head of many large
