^anything but turpentine; arid’tis I
’ do not know anything else, "I “will
try to give you a few dots on 'the
‘ great industry of the pine belt fc-
tgion of Georgia.
Well, to commence with,we will
*first see how the turpentine is ex-
' tiacted from the tree. The inspect
or first gets a number of long-
bladed axes, called box-axes, and
then a lot of-hands to use them,
s&nd goes 'but into the pine forest
or woods, as we call it, and puts
the hands to cutting notches or
'boxes in the pine trees. Each box
|hatffo*be a certain griage, so many
’inches in ‘the stump, so many
'‘across the face, so many in the
*back, and when a man cuts*a box
he calls oat a certain number and
‘gets credit for his box. I believe
’we have about finished catting
boxes, and now comes the corner
ing of the'boxes. There has to be
'■a chip taken out of each side of
’the box to prepare for the chip-
tper. Then comes the chipper with
! his hack, a tool'that has a sharp
bill and cuts a somewhat rounding

Piffle or no turpentine in the heart
‘of a pine. Then the turpentine
ranis down into the box we have
cuffflrst. And then the dipper
<comes-along, and with a fiat iron,
Shade somewhat in the shape of a
spoon* dijfe 'ilhe turpentine out of
the boxes and puts it into his backet
and afterwards pours it
into a barrel; then the wagons
come and carry it to the still.
3Phe'turpentine is poured out of
*the barrel into a large kettle on
that heats the turpentine.
That causes the vapor to rise and
-go down into what is called a
worm, .and forms into spirits and
flows down into a tub that is made
to catch it. Then the distiller
dipg.it np.and pours it into bar
rels, and then it is shipped to mar
ket
After all the spirits have been
forcefl from the turpentine, a ;
jgreat deal of the remainder is
rosin. The rosin is turned into a
targe vat while it is hot, bat it goes
through a pair of strainers or
frames made With wire on them,
and a roll of cotton is laid in the
bottom of the strainer to get all
the fine grit out of the rosin. It
,goes through this process before
Entering the vat. N After it is run
into the vat it is dipped oat and
poured into barrels, and shipped

world.
How exciting it is for a boy to
go into the woods where forty or
fifty men are cutting boxes! The
chips flying around them, the
bands calling out their nithibers
and. the tallyman marking down
their boxes. Some men cut 150
and 800 a day, bat when they cut
800 they are very good cutters.
