cussion the report of the commit
tee, including my first resolution
verbatim, was unanimously adopt
ed, leaving my second resolution
for further action. Without aDy
canvass I had ascertained that a
large number of the Conference
were in favor of my second resolu
tion.
As the Conference, however, had
by its adoption of my first resolu
tion, unanimously espoused the
cause of non-sectarian common
school education of the people by
the state, and as the discussion ’ of
my second resolution was likely to
be prolonged and somewhat ani
mated—extending the session of
Conference beyond the usual limit
—I determined not to insist on
this resolution. After requesting
the indulgence or the Conference,
I was proceeding, without a mo
tion, to justify myself in moving

in high terms throught Georgia,

dren to educate, aud are too illib

This I met by a motion to adopt
my second resolution as an amend
ment to the report, and concluded
my speech, which was received by
the Conference with very decided
demonstrations of approval. Dr.
Hinton replied with the old- moss-
back constitutional objection,
which I answered. I then with-
difew my amendment as I had in
tended, but not without entreaties
from ail over the floor not to with
draw.
I believe a vote would have
shown a large majority in its fa
vor. So much for the action of
Conference on these bvital ques
tions. It placed itself ahead of the
North Georgia Conference, which
the week before adopted a resolu
tion of “sympathy with the move
ment in favor of popular educa
tion.'’ “
