of business opportunities await the
men of enterprise that would pur
sue them to success. Bnt the
“have-beens” will tel L you of some
golden age of long ago, and his
imagination will draw for you a
land in which* milk and honey
flowed. He is unmindful of any
important achievement of the
present age, but can point out
something done in the days of his
ancestors, the overshadowing great
ness of which, from his point of
View, dwarfs all else in compari
son. He is loath to undertake
anything in this unappreciative
age. Honesty is not valued
among citizens as of yore, accord
ing to him, and he fears that some
one lies in wait to take undue ad
vantage of him at all times.
These continued grumblings
produce upon the minds of the
youth of the land a feeling of dis
couragement. They lose their
energy and falling into the habits
of the com planners, soon becomes
one of ffreir number. Instead of
showing.your town, county and vi
cinity m an unfavorable light by
comparison’with some] past age,
speak in praise of it when it can
be done consistently. Nevef’speak
discouragiftgly; when things go
amiss work to rectify them, grum
bling, complaining and fault-find
ing will never do it.
The past with all. its pleasant
and unpleasant memories can nev
er be reclaimed; then make happi
ness, peace and ylenty out of the
present. It can be done, but not

There are numbers of inventions
already upon the market, which if
taken advantage of, would greatly
reduce the cost of working the
farms of the growing crops, as
well as in preparing the soil.
It has been said and very truly,
that the negro is the best laborer
the south can get. But why?
Simgly because the southern peo
ple have known no other labor nor
any other method than the negro
and the mule.
Take almost any improved farm
implement, and with skilled labor,
the work of two or three hands
can be saved over and above the
present system. .
These are matters that concern
our farmers directly, and they
should consider them well, and
take some steps toward the inaug
uration of better methods, which
•means less cost of work, by means
of using improved farm tools and
