pulling power that makes the ani

This “shell,” if properly tanned
and shaven of its sinewy matter—a
most difficult task—makes the best
wearing leather in existence, and
proves the theory of old-time shoe
makers—that only leather of a long
fibre will wear—to be a mistaken
one, as the “shell” has no fibre.
In this it has a decided advantage
over calfskin with its fibres; the
breaking of any one throws addi
tional strain upon the other, and a
break in the leather soon follows.
Experience has demonstrated
that the “shell” will wear two or
three times longer than calfskin.
Cordovan possesses another great
advantage in being nearest water

fineness of texture also permits its
taking a very high polish.
Few people are aware of the im
mense extent" of the traffic in live
cattle and dressed beef that is now
carried on between this country
and England. In one week recently
there arrived at Liverpool seven
teen steamers, each of which had
in the neighborhood of 700 beef
cattle and from 1000 to 2000 quar
ters of beef, besides large numbers
of mutton carcasses. Large im
ports of cattle and beef are also
made at other ports in the United
Kingdom.
It is estimated that the expense
of maintaining the prisons of the
United States amounts to $75,000,-
000 a year; but this is only a small
part of the cost entailed upon the
people at large by the existence of
the criminal class. The mainten
ance of the police department, it
is calculated, costs another $75,000,-
000. Then there are in the United
States more than 2,000 courts pos
sessing criminal jurisdiction, to say
nothing of more than 80,000 jus
tices of the peace, a majority of
whom have a limited criminal juris
diction.
It will be news perhaps to many
that the consumption of pig iron
in this country is greater than in
Great Britain, but it was in 1886,

Now for the first time the produc
tion in this country is greater than
it ever was in Great Britain for any
year, and probably greater week by
week than it is there now.

In “Christ in the Camp; or, Be-
ligion in the Southern Armies,”
Dr. J. Wm. Jones (the fighting
chaplain) has done a grand work
in bringing together in permanent
and readable form the record of
the great' religious work which
went on among the soldiery. Every
family throughout the Southland
should possess a copy. It gives
the best possible guarantee, if any
were needed, that the work of the
same author, on the “Memorial
Volume of Jefferson Davis for, The
World’s Tribute to His Memory,”
will, leave nothing to be desired.
It is'said that he is progressing
rapidly with this work, and will
soon have it ready for the press.
Having the co-operation of Mrs.
Davis, and access to abundant
material of the most intense inter
est, the volume is sure to be one
that will be eagerly sought after.
It will be brought out in handsome
and durable form, and at a price to
bring it within the reach of even
the poorest; while there will be an
expensive edition for those who
will desire this great work in the
best dress that can be put upon it.
It will be sold only by subscription,
and thus every family will have an
shoe on the reverse side of the body
to-that in which the tooth was ach
ing. An excellent recipe for weak
or sore eyes was the expressed juice
of the calyx of the red honeysuckle;
provided always that the flowers
were gathered ‘kneeling, repeating
ffine paternostors in honor of the
Trinity, nine more “to greet Our
Ladye,” and a creed. Best and
sleep were required after applica
tion.
Another prescription for the eyes
muclYin favor with the Anglo-Sax
ons was a pastejmade of the straw
berry plant andl pepper, diluted
with sweet wine. Children were
passed through the split stem of a
tree for the cure of the rickets, but
the fracture must be afterward
bound up sufficiently tight to insure
cohesion. For ague a very salted
herring, split open, was applied, as
hot as possible, to the feet. It
might also be mitigated by the
habitual wearing round the neck of
an emerald—a gem equally potent
in epilepsy. _ Precious stones were
accredited with marvelous powers
over the moral qualities and affec
tions, as well as'physical disease—
heDce the origin of their being set
in rings and worn. The teeth of
old age were fixed firmly in the
gums by an infusion of powdered
jet; while water in which the beryl
had been steeped afforded a valu
able wash for strengthening the
eyes, beside insuring the mutual
love of a wedded couple.

HOW?
“Can the world know a man has a good
thing unless he advertises the possession
of it.”—Vanderbilt.
The rumor that the young Ger
man Emperor’a chronic earaches
are affecting his brain is revived.
The newspapers of Germany are
as profoundly silent on the subject
as Bismarck himself, but private
advices received in London are to
the effect that the Emperor has
been acting queerly since he caught
cold while shooting near Stettin,
and that those close to him are “in
great apprehension.”
There are in Florida 10,000orange
growers. The acreage is 100,000
and the capital invested is from
$60,000,000 to $75,000,000. Three
seasons ago there were produced
1.250.000 boxes; two seasons ago,
2.100.000, and the last season about
2.500.000 boxes. Itis estimated
that the crop of 1890 will be over
4000.000.

The following extract, taken from
a letter written by Mr. E. A. Bell,
fully explains itself:
"While surveying land in 1883 I
accidently handled poison oak vine,
and in less than three hours (the
eruption usually resulting from
such contact begins in ten days)
my face was swollen and disfigured,
and my hands and arms seriously
affected. I immediately began tak
ing Swift’s Specific (S. S. S.)| and
after taking three large bottles I
found all signs of the breaking oat
entirely removed. I was led to
suspect its return at the same time
next year, but it did not, nor has
there been any indications of its
return since.
My little boy, eight years old,
was afflicted with the same poison
in 1884 After taking several bot
tles of Swift’s Specific (S. S. S.)
the eruptions entirely disappeared.
A very slight form of the same
eruption returned during the next
spring, but we then resumed the
S. S. S., and having taken enough
during that season to make the cure
permanent, he has not since had
any return of the disease. Swift’B
Specific (S. S. S.) certainly effected
thorough cures in both thefee cases,
