l t ! Don’t give all the waste milk to Pigs- The refuse straw from hat shops makes a good muleli for strawber ry patches. Don’t allow the poultry drop pings to accumulate in the house for weeks at a time. A safe rule to follow is to retain all sows that have successfully raised their litters. Have you ever figured out what it Costs you to keep a cow for a year? ’ If not, why not? Do you know of any reason why a farmer should not keep “ac counts” as well as any other busi ness man? The common practice of many farmers of keeping more horses than they have employment for in winter is destructive of profit. Don’t hatch out a lot of chick ens in midwinter, or very early spring, anless you have a suitable place in which to raise them. The buildings, fences and vehi cles of the “good farmer” are well taken care of, and neatness is a feature of his house and farm. Don’t imagine that beeuase “fowls in the wild state never have cooked food,” it is unnecessary to give domestic fowls cooked food. Any breed that fails to • pay its bills can meet with but little per manent popularity, so to reason invertingly, we may feel that the popular breed is a paying breed. What more could you expect? It is estimated that a horse can pull twice as much on a macadam road as on a dirt raod; three times as much on a road paved with granite blocks as on a macadam road, and two and one-fifth times as. much over asphalt as over gran ite. U Love in marriage should be the accomplishment of a beautiful dream, and not, as it often proves, the end. A cause or principle is not nes- ossarily wrong because some of those who advocate it are injudi cious or inconsistent. It is by liis personal conduct that any man of ordinary power will do the greatest amount of good that is in him to do. Life’s real heroes and heroines arc those who bear their, own bur dens bravely and give a helping hand to those around them. There will never exist anything permanently noble and excellent in a character which is a stranger to the exercise of resolute self- denial. • Make all the money you can and do the best with it, remembering that he who lives for himself alone lives for the meanest man in crea tion. His feet are in a straddle position; that is, one on each side, and rest upon foot rests, which are fastened to the seat by means of steel rods. To set the curious machine in motion the rider leans forward, thus changing the center of gravi ty and causing the wheel to re volve. The next move is to re-es tablish the center of gravity, but according to the inventor the cen ter cannot be found and the wheel continues revolving, gaining speed at each turn. There is no limit to the speed obtainable. The edges of both wheels ai;e grooved and can he used on a railroad track as well as on the ground. By means of a peculiar arrangement of canvas, which covers the steel spokes near the center and forms an air tight space which extends around the wheel, the inventor says the struct ure can travel in water as well as on land. The canvas, when the machine is used on land, serves as an umbrella to shield the rider from the sun and rain. The machine can be made to com plete a circle by simply throwing the weight on the opposite side from which the rider desires to go. A passenger can be carried by simply extending the seat to the small wheel. The seat does not move when the machine is in op eration; in fact, it acts as the axle, allowing the wheel to slide around it. Hr. Brietemmoser claims that the heavier the load earned the quicker the machine can travel, The model is yet a very crude looking affair. The canvas which serves as an umbrella and float is ornamented with the inscription, “Perpecturl Motion, Joseph Briet emmoser, 1888.” The inventor has already secured ten patents for va rious devices invented by him. He"is also employed in building a very peculiar looking mill, which, when, completed, will be capable | of turning out six to ten different grapes of flour at the same time. The grinding stone, is made of cast iron, and is kept in a sharp condi tion by means of an emory wheel which revolves with it. the The republican organs are pre tending that the republican major ity of the House is acting fairly and justly in the contested election cases. Last year the raiders jjare more daring than ever, approaching within few miles of the capital; and at village called Danbo, over which the French flag floated, they kill ed the chief and his family, and; wrapping the head of one of their victims in the French flag, pro ceeded to take it to the King Dahomey. Recently Dr. Bayol, the French governor of the Gabon capital, while on a visit to the Da homian capital, was compelled witness the killing of 200 prison ers in one forenoon. Such atroci ties as these aroused France to ac tion. Dahomey is not far from mouth of the Niger. The source of its revenue is neither agricul ture nor any kind of industry, but the traffic in slaves. The people worship idols, and make human sacrifices to them, and when the old king died, sometime ago, son, who became king in his stead, determined to celebrate his obse qnies by making human sacrifices on a larger scale than ever before, and he procured the victims from Porto Xovo. He is said to image himself a great and powerful ruler, and to have announced his inten tion of taking all the prisoners he pleases. He has an ’army various ly estimated at from 15,000 to 25, 000 warriors, some of whom, as our readers know, are women. The army was formerly, a very lage one, but it has dwindled year by year, and as it is composed poor soldiers, poorly equipped, it is not very formidable, and the civililihg task which . France has undertaken is not likely to he so difficult as some reports indicate. There is a great deal of differ ence between Alliancemen voting as farmers and the Alliance taking a hand in politics as an organiza tion. Should the Alliance do this as a body it woald become a" po litical party. We have no fears of this. The Alliancemen are all good Democrats and the reforms they purpose inaugurating will be made within the Democratic ranks. How many women with regular features that might be beautiful, are not, and instead of awakening our admiration only arouse our pity.- Their hollow eyes and sunk- en cheeks and sallow skin haunt our memory. Alas! an invalid wife or mother or sister fills the house with gloom and sadness, and an otherwise happy fireside is shadowed with a pall of regret. Blessed he the physician who - has invented a remedy with power to strengthen the female organiza tion, that regulates the delicate functions of feminine life, that .re lieves those bearing-down pains, that brightens the eyes and beauti fies the complexion with the glow of health. Such a remedy is Dr. Bull’s Sarsaparilla. It is woman s best friend for counteracting, the evils that afflict her sex. Thou-1 -Thustbe spectacle.of a mob of foreign laborers in a Pennsylvania town protesting against the hoist ing of the American flag on a school building has its significance. And they did not protest mildly, but by threats of violence intimi dated the people and carried their point, the school board deciding that it was better to yield than precipitate a riot. It was finally decided that one thousand men would be necessary to protect the Americans in their patriotic purpose, otherwise the flag would have to lay low. A fine state of affairs, truly!
